tranquilpc Windows home server - cannot log on http://server/home/ RRS feed

  • Question

  • I have just bought a home server from tranquilpc.co.uk its a nice piece of kit but i cannot get the remote access working.

I have contacted tranquil twice by email but they have not replied, i assume they now have my cash i am not important.

Basically   i log on to the web page http://server/home   ok and i then press the log on button and i get page cannot be displayed.

I have remote desktopped to the server and everything looks ok on the IIS.

I cannot connect to https://server/remote at all.

I have installed the toolkit and this tells me everything is ok with IIS and its sites.

I am sure its a silly setting somewhere, if i get the remote website working i think the remote access will spring to life.

Before i go silly and re-install from fresh, can anyone help me.

    Regards in advance.

Can you walk me through the steps you have performed to enable remote access on your box?

  • I've just put up something that should help  in the other thread that you posted on - which I started because I had the same problem a week or so ago!

Sadly its not something tranquil will really be able to help you with, this one is microsofts c**k up. The best way I have found to contact tranquil is by phone - they were very helpfull with another problem I had.

Frustrating isn't it - a really pretty , shiny box turns up and it doesn't work properly. - After two days of the fault I was ready to reinstall - but since other users here were on their 5th reinstall and had got no further I waited and microsoft sorted it out and magically it all worked.

I have to say the tranquil PC and homeserver soloution is actually very good. Mine is backing up 5 machines and storing huge amounts of rubbish from all the other machines and the remote access has proved really useful - all with no noise and not burning too much electricity.

Also I've been able to attempt making changes to my pc that I wouldn't dare trying if I didn't have the security of knowing that everything was safely backed up.

So do your best to be patient (hard I know - if you look at some of my posts on this board I was still up at 3am each night trying to get the thing to work and was ready to throw it out the window) - it is worth waiting for.

  • Most likely a firewall problem / setting on the client. Please read http://blogs.msdn.com/eldar/archive/2007/04/28/windows-home-server-client-join-troubleshoooting-hints.aspx to troubleshoot.

i have just spent several hours trawling through the forum and the problems i am having seem very common.

I have a netgear 384 GT router which is upnp compatible, yet it wont auto set.  I did this manually. 80/443/4125

On the router configure  If i then ignore the router warning  the 3rd test states that my remote access is not working.

I installed the WHS toolkit and it tells me the WHS is ok and has no problems.

If i tried registering my whs domain name  mydomain.homeserver.com i get the unexpected error.

type in http://server/home   i get the home page    if i press logon i get page cannot be display

type in https://server/remote i get page cannot be display

type in http://server/upnp  i get a page but there is no links   so i dont no what this is doing

Had a quick look at iis and everything seems ok

there is a patch which some people have removed   914941, so i may try that.

Basically i am very happy with the kit, but i nievly expected it to work out of the box.

  • Mike, why start looking into these kinds of "dark" solutions? Please follow the link in my previous post and you will find the behaviour you described + solution. If this doesn't fix it, please post again. Probably it's port 56000 being blocked in your local, router or WHS firewall

You are trying to access the server locally (in the correct way) so port forwarding in your router is not relevant.

Sounds like the problem on this thread to me:

    http://forums.microsoft.com/windowshomeserver/showpost.aspx?postid=2868786&isthread=false&siteid=50&sb=0&d=1&at=7&ft=11&tf=0&pageid=0

Note that just removing 914941 did not work for me but a reinstall and not installing 914941 did!
