still having issues with P2P-only syncs RRS feed

  • Question

  • i had quit using P2P-only syncs due to failures (only .wlx files showing up) with the CTP version.  So now I tried a few.  And the ones with only a few small files (<50KB each) P2P synced among machine1 and machine2 (both in my home) have worked fine.

but i tried a dir tree of mp3 files P2P between my machine1 (at my house) and machine3 (work notebook which is at the office).  It's not a large number of files, nor is it any big size -- <3GB, and the total of my other use of Mesh/Live Desktop is <20MB , in case there's a GB limit on what can be xfrd thru the Mesh, not simply stored on it.

I set it up about 5:00pm ET on Thursday, and here it is 2:30pm ET on Friday, and nothing but the dir structure and 0-byte .wlx files exists on machine3 so far.  That was created almost immediately when i first set up the sync, just no changes since.  Home is on 3.0Mbps/640 DSL and office is on single T1.

    all machines XPsp3.

    Hi,

If you haven't done so already, would you mind filing a bug for us on this, and attaching logs from the computer that will not synchronize?  Also, if you could describe your company network setup (since that seems to be a factor), that might help us narrow in on the problem.  Once you have submitted the bug, if you could also post the Connect Feedback ID here I'd appreciate it, as that will make it easier for me to track the issue.

    Thanks,

    Ben.

  • Hi,

Since you've waited almost a full day, and you're seeing no synchronization at all, there's clearly something blocking the sync of those mp3 files.  Would you mind opening a bug and attaching logs from both computers involved (machine1 & machine3)?  Also, have you had any other files (not in that music folder) sync between machines 1 & 3?

If you can post your Connect Feedback ID here after you filed the bug, I'll follow up once we've learned something.

    Thanks,

    Ben.

no, this is the only P2P sync between these two boxes... all other syncs that are on machine1<-> machine3 are also synced with Live Desktop.  Those are fine.

  • As far as i remember Mesh doesn't syncro the .bak file. You should rename it some other way.

    Hope this helps

  • ok, i left my machine3 at the office all weekend & nothing happened.  I sent new logs to the lmprev email yesterday evening.  Now tonight I brought machine3 home with me & connected to my local home network (same LAN as machine1/machine2) and the the little Mesh icon started spinning & was showing xxxMB of 3.04GB transferred.  And in short order, everything had been transferred!

so is this because Mesh is now smart enough to do the xfr locally if the two P2P boxes are on the same LAN?  or is it possible something was blocking at the office??  There is no proxy or any web filtering at the office, only a Cisco 5510 Adaptive Security Appliance (glorified Cisco PIX firewall).  I cannot imagine something with it causing problems -- it would be a first.  And if it was causing an issue, I'm certainly interested in figuring it out, because I do think this is a very useful product.

  • Hi,
I seem to have the same problem. In my situation, everything that goes through Live Desktop gets synched, but P2P is "not working".
In fact, the placeholders are there but after several hours no single palceholder has been "replaced" by the actual file (files are exes, dlls and text).

My workplace does have a proxy and in fact remote desktop to the office PC is not available when I'm home. Could this be the cause?

    Cheers

  • I'm having a similar issue too. I have sent my log files to lmprev@microsoft.com

After I updated Live Mesh on both of my computers last Friday, I noticed that any new files I create in the Live Mesh Folder do not sync, but only show .wlx placeholder files. This has been going on since Friday, October, 31st, when I updated both computers to the latest Live Mesh Client version. I do not have Live Desktop enabled. What could be wrong? Is there something I should change in my firewall? It seemed to work fine in the past until this last update.

    Hi,

After looking at your logs, our support personnel narrowed the issue down to a device identification problem that shows up in various permutations for different people - and sometimes goes away randomly, as it seems to have done for you.  Have you tried taking that computer back to your office to see if it will work in that environment now?  The environmental factors (in this case, home versus office) should not have any impact on this issue.  Unfortunately, we do not yet have any good workarounds for this bug, but we're working hard to fix it.

    Thanks for you patience,

    Ben.

  • ok, took machine3 back to the office & added a file to the folder.  Also added a file to the folder on machine1.  On both machines, the .wlx file showed up almost instantaneously, but the file itself has yet to materialize (4 hrs. later).

Same for me.  I have the placeholders only on the second machine.  Look forward to a fix.

  • I can confirm this bug...after working with Live Mesh for my two PCs (Desktop and Notebook) I tried deploying mesh on my company so that all PCs sync with my home desktop PC. No amount of work helped and the only computer that synced was the notebook when it was connected to the home network. Given this, I decided to use Foldershare for my company and Mesh for myself.

  •  I have the same problem only empty wlx-files and folders. I can however, access shared files through Live Mesh Folder from the Internet Space! I have sent an log-file to

    lmprev.
