Microsoft Updates will not install after office 2007 install

Question
-
I have Vista Home Premium,,,installed and activated . After recently installing Office Home 2007 -- and successfully activating it -- Microsoft Update will not install.
Windows Update works just fine.
This is the response when attempting to install microsoft update......
Microsoft Update could not be installed on your computer
Make sure that you log on as an administrator or as a member of the Administrators group, and then try again.
More troubleshooting options
- If your computer is connected to a network and the problem persists, contact your system administrator to see if your Microsoft Update settings are managed using group policy.
- If your computer is not connected to a network, or if your system administrator has not disabled Microsoft Update, check if the Windows Update service is disabled or stopped. To see how to start a service, search Help and Support on your computer.
Note: If you experience problems with installing Microsoft Update, you can continue to get updates for your computer by going to Windows Update in Control Panel.
[Error number: 0x800A0046]I have the only account on this notebook....and I am the Administrator
Windows update is "started" and set to "automatic" startup type
I keep UAC disabled as I am serious about security..keeping Norton IS 2007 updated daily....and checking Windows Updates daily.
BOTH Vista and Office 2007 are activated and genuine...passing the genuine diagnostic at
http://www.microsoft.com/Genuine/diag/RunDiags.aspx?displayLang=en
all diagnostics show "passed" and clicking both "validate" (windows & office) buttons show "validation successful" & "validation complete"
I have run the Office diagnostics from Word 2007 options menu -- all show just fine.
HELP!!!

Thanks Stephen....Although the KB wasnt specific to Vista, I ran through the suggested resolutions in the KB.
My current settings were already aligned with the KB resolutions....
DCOM permissions and properties were already as suggested.
No Guest accounts exist on this notebook and I am the administrator
userdata persistence settings are as suggested
finally gpedit.msc wasnt a valid run command in vista
I even disabled protected mode in IE and attempted the Microsoft Update again......still did not install.
Again, remember that Windows Update works perfectly.
other thoughts?
thanks

Stephen,
it is indeed the same error code each time.
this is the only issue with a Vista notebook that otherwise works perfectly. Vista has been an easy transition for me -- this is an OEM installed version, so there were no OS upgrade issues.
Vista is fully patched with all recommended and critical windows updates.
Issue only occured after install of activated and verified copy office 2007 Home.
Windows Update was the only necessary level of installed MS activeX update service so I never attempted to install the activeX for Microsoft Update until after the Office 2007 install.
thanks again for your help

Stephen,
Thanks for all your help....I believe the issue is solved.
Rather than focus on the error code, I searched the Vista support link you provided in the last post for "microsoft update" issues.
the page below was a simple resolution, although the error code was completely different.
I cannot believe this resolution didnt occur to me.....simply create a temporary administrator account -- install Microsoft update -- then delete the temp admin account.
Although none of the "causes" apply to my PC, the resolution works.
Thanks again for your good work.
