What is the difference between window outlook, window live essential and Mozilla thunderbird ? please help !!

  I am using window 7 ultimate and some day ago I prompt for an optional update for window live essential. When I read about it form internet I came to know that it is a program for accessing the email account and it is the way to get rid of web mail. We can store more than one email address in it and accesses the old email even remain at offline. But i also heard that there are some other programs for the same purpose like window outlook and mozilla thunderbird. what is the difference between the three and which is best to use. Does this program speak that "you got mail" when we got new mail or not. As I found it is the default sound in the window default sounds I and I guess that it may probably work when we use window mail?
