An unauthorized change was made to Windows

    Question

  • Had to reload windows on my laptop using the Dell disk provided.  Spent hours loading and updating windows and now today I have limited access and get a unauthorized change notice.   The product key on the report does not match the one on the bottom of the laptop, but I was never asked to enter it during the reinstall process.  Microsoft help isn insanely unhelpful and there is no way to contact a real person electronically or verbally.  I get stuck in a ridiculous do-loop that tells me how to use the start menu to enter my product key.  Of course, I can't even get to the start menu, nor find anyone to call.  Read dozens of these posts, but no answers.   Please HELP, way to much time invested and so little help.

  • Hello Sparty94,

As a first step, please try the below instructions to recreate Vista's Licensing Store.  If that doesn't resolve the issue, please tell us any errors or unusual behavior (if any) you see while following the instructions or afterwards.

    1) Open an Internet Explorer window.
    2) Type: %windir%\system32 into the browser address bar.
    3) Find the file CMD.exe
    4) Right-Click on CMD.exe and select Run as Administrator <-very important
    5) Type: net stop slsvc  (it may ask you if you are sure, select yes)
    6) Type: cd %windir%\ServiceProfiles\NetworkService\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\SoftwareLicensing
    7) Type: rename tokens.dat tokens.bar
    8) Type: cd %windir%\system32
    9) Type: net start slsvc
    10) Type: cscript slmgr.vbs -rilc (It may take a long time for this to complete, please be patient)
    11) Restart your computer twice.
    12) You may be required to enter the Product Key and/or re-Activate. Be sure to use the key listed on the sticker located on the side, bottom or (for some laptops) in the battery compartment of the PC.  To activate, use the By Phone method.

    Thank you,
