Windows 7 change product ID failure RRS feed

  • Question

  • The hard disk on my Sony Vaio failed and I had a new one fitted by a specialist repairer. Soon afterwards I noted that Windows 7 did not update. I tried many ways to overcome this without success and now get continual Microsoft warnings that my copy is not genuine. However I do have a legal copy of Windows 7 originally installed on the PC. I checked the Product ID now installed and noted that it was different to that originally shown by Sony so I went to “change product key”. After entering the original key the authentication check was successful BUT the key shown did not change. How do I overcome this problem?

  • To properly analyse and solve problems with Activation and Validation, we need to see a full copy of the report produced by the MGADiag tool
(download and save to desktop - http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?linkid=52012 )
     Once saved, run the tool.
Click on the Continue button, which will produce the report.
To copy the report to your response, click on the Copy button in the tool (ignore any error messages at this point), and then paste (using either r-click/Paste, or Ctrl+V ) into your response.
      - **in your own thread**, please

Please also state the Version and Edition of Windows quoted on your COA sticker (if you have one) on the case of your machine (or inside the battery compartment), but do NOT quote the Key on the sticker!

  • Sticker on PC  says Windows 7 Home Prem OA  but now I am confused - I thought that Product ID and Product Key were the same (wrong!). The Product key that is showing on the report is the same as on the sticker i.e. the correct one. So why do I get the Microsoft messages saying that my copy of Windows is not genuine and linked with that it will not load updates?

  • The problem is the large number of file mismatches showing -

This may simply be caused by a bad set of Intel Rapid Storage Technology drivers -

Installing the Intel Rapid Storage Drivers

try downloading and installing them from here - http://downloadcenter.intel.com/Detail_Desc.aspx?agr=Y&ProdId=2101&DwnldID=21730

    (you want the iata_enu.exe download)

Once complete, please reboot twice, then post another MGADiag report.

  • Thanks for your prompt and helpful answers. One thing before I run iata.enu.exe I note that the information on the webpage states for Operating systems Windows Server 2003, Windows Vista, Windows XP.  Is that OK to run as I am using Windows 7?

  • It is also for Win7 :)

  • Hooray!!!  Windows will now update so I assume that it is  resolved!  Many many thanks for your very effective assistance. The hard disk was replaced while I was in UK but now I am in South Africa so it was difficult to get back to the people who replaced it.
