  • L.M. Thank you for including the diagnostic output.

Try going to http://www.microsoft.com/genuine/default.mspx and cliciking on the text "Validate Windows" in the image on the page. If this works, please visit the http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com website again. If you are still unable to access the Windows Update site please let me know what error you are receiving from the Windows Update site.

As a side note, I would like to encourage you to validate your copy of Office since I think it may not be genuine. To validate Office goto http://www.microsoft.com/genuine/default.mspx and click on the text "Validate Office" in the image.

Are you downloading Office Updates or Windows Updates?

I try to "Validate Windows", but I'm not able to install the active-x control, so go with the alternative method and successfully validate.
When I go to Windows Update receive the same error:
    ---------------------------
Validation Incomplete: Unable to Perform Validation
    [0x80080299]
Why didn’t my machine complete validation?
You have encountered an unknown error. Please contact your local product support team for further assistance with this issue.
    --------------------------

    I've tried also:
    1) deactivate antivirus and firewall
    2) delete LegitCheckControl.dll (in C:\WINDOWS\system32)
    3) right click-update Windows Genuine Advantage Validation Tool (in C:\WINDOWS\Downloaded Program Files)
    4) delete Windows Genuine Advantage Validation Tool (in C:\WINDOWS\Downloaded Program Files)
    5) click start, then run, then type in "wgatray.exe /b
    6) delete data.dat (in C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Windows Genuine Advantage\data)
    7) update with Microsoft Update instead of Windows Update

but I'm still not able to download active-x controls in http://www.microsoft.com/genuine/downloads/Validate.aspx?displaylang=en
and I still get the same error 0x80080299 in Windows Update.

I would really appreciate any help!

Sorry for my bad english :)

  • L.M.:

It seems there may be an issue with your ActiveX controls not loading correctly. I suggset submitting a WGA support case here

     http://support.microsoft.com/oas/default.aspx?&c1=509&gprid=9860&

Ok, I will submitt the case to the support.

Is there any method to reinstall the Active-X controls manually?

I tried without success to install this
    http://www.download.windowsupdate.com/msdownload/update/v3-19990518/cabpool/wgainstall_9160b6b3929938243b7d18417810677d9b9983b7.exe

    I tried also
    without success this procedure
    http://www.microsoft.com/communities/newsgroups/en-us/default.aspx?dg=microsoft.public.it.windowsupdate&tid=386f50b7-ba7e-4fab-aab8-64264064e6c9&cat=it_IT_B9FAA721-88D1-8A9D-C7CA-3662848FB3EE&lang=it&cr=IT&sloc=en-us&p=1

  • FIXED!!!

I've forced the registry to download the WGA Active-X control in this way:

    1) Create the following key:
    HKEY_CURRENT_USER\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\policies\Ext\CLSID

    2) Create this string (REG_SZ)
    {17492023-C23A-453E-A040-C7C580BBF700}

    3) Set it to 1

    4) Reboot

    5) Validate Windows here
    http://www.microsoft.com/genuine

    Now Windows Update works fine!!!
