Workflow Wait Contitions (Waiting for something OR something else)

Question
-
Hi all,
Well I just started using workflows in the CRM and I am unfamiliar with how they function so I am hoping this is a simple fix.
If I wanted to create a wait condition for a duration or an email condition is this possible to do without using custom code?
I have done some google searches and didn't any information on whether or not the wait conditions could be used for something to do "or" commands. I am sure this is simple but I don't want to start on creating something and then find out there was an easier way to do it.
If anybody could help me or point me in the direction of good research material for this I would appreciate it.
Thanks in advance,
Chris

Richard Knudson has the single best site out there for Workflow, he has even written a book on it.
