Updated avatar with a .gif file- 305kb... animation? RRS feed

  • Question

  •    I just (or I think I have) updated my avatar with a .gif file that is 305kb. Size: 215x215. It has animation, but the animation is not showing. The FAQ section states for avatar pics:

    ----------------------------------------------------------

Why am I receiving an error while setting my avatar?

You might receive an error while setting your avatar because of the following reasons:

      • The size of the image being uploaded is greater than 1 MB.
        • Select an image that is smaller than 1 MB in size. If your image is not in the jpg format and around 220x220 in pixel size, use your favorite image editor to create the image and then try uploading again.
      • The file is not in the preferred file format (i.e. is not in the GIF, JPG or PNG file format).
      • Convert the image you wish to upload into a GIF, JPG or PNG file and then try uploading again.

    ----------------------------------------------------------

Any help you can give is appreciated.

Just to make it more clear... The reason I said that 'I think' I updated my avatar, is because the animated GIF file uploaded starts out exactly like my given avatar picture. So in looking at it, I don't know which one it is. All I know is that it's not animating... Tried IE, Firefox and Chrome... no animation is seen in the posts the last time I checked.

  • When I updated my avatar it took a few days before it appeared. I would wait awhile, although I also have never seen an animated avatar, so that might be a problem.

  • Still no joy. So it looks like '.gif avatar file animation is not available'.

I'm a little disappointed that on a Microsoft forum website, that Gifs are not allowed to be animated.

Must be by an executive decision.

If so, this little fact should have been put into the Help section for profile avatars.. It would have saved me a lot of time creating one... and probably others as well.

  • Excuse me, but why does my thread say that it was answered? MS re-designed the whole TechNet site, but didn't think to allow animation for animated .gif files???

This thread is answered? I spent two days creating an animated .gif file for my avatar... and it doesn't work...

I like MS.. but I submit respectfully that this thread is ->not answered<-

IMHO, animated avatars, as well as complex multi-line signatures, should be banned from the forums.

maybe... But then if this is true, then .gif files should not be able to be uploaded as an avatar.... It's misleading, as .gif files normally have animation. Also, the avatar help section (as shown in the first post of this thread) should say something about animation being disallowed.

  • Send an email to Fissues at Microsoft. That will escalate the issue to that team.

    Thanks!

Thank you for the advice. I sent it and received a friendly reply. The issue is still pending, however.
