Little Problem activating. RRS feed

  • Question

  • I had previously installed vista brand new retail Ultimate, 499.99CND Ouch lol, anyways, the harddrive that it was installed on sucks so I got a new harddrive, SATA2. Installed vista fine almost 3 days ago, i think. Then just about an hour ago it came up saying I had to activate windows again. So I went to do so, and it says the key is already used so I followed up on this site about other people having similar problems, so I tried those and went to and ran the Microsoft Genuine Advantage Diagnostic tool and after that it said everything was fine and that I should activate it. So I did that and it went to another page saying I am genuine and thanks for activating or something on the lines of that. I haven't restarted my computer yet so this may be why, but when I go into the system properties it says I still have to activate it within 27days. However from the diagnostic tool provided it seems to be genuine and activated, should the countdown disappear after restart or eventually?

Here is the stats from the tool you provided. Thanks again.

Update: moments ago it still came up and said Activating windows, and then still said the key is in use. I even did the following Please try this: open a command prompt and type "slmgr -ipk <your product key>".  Then revalidate by clicking "Validate Windows" here: www.microsoft.com/genuine

and it says at the end that thank you for validating... so what up?

    Thanks

  • Hello,

If your System Properties window is showing that you're not activated and online validation says you are, please phone activate by opening a command prompt and typing:

    slui 4 (then press Enter)

Follow the prompts through phone activation (be ready for lots of numbers) and then reboot.

Once you're done, please revalidate by clicking on "Validate Windows" here: www.microsoft.com/genuine

Let me know if that works.  Thanks a lot!

  • if this is the case, what caused it to make me have to activate it again, I just bought the retail and was told their is no limit to how many times u can install windows on your computer without having to call in unlike the windows xp that came with the dell computer. I am always upgrading hardware and testing out new software, sometimes requireing multiple reformats, I really dont want to have to call everytime that happens.

    Thanks
