Connector Password

Question
-
Good morning,
I have been running CTP, a clean install, since it came out, without any problems.
Been away for a couple of days over the holiday weekend and on return, found one XP computer, hard wired, had suddenly stopped doing backups. The only message on the server, is that an unknown network error happened.
Have tried connecting via Connector, but it tells me the password is invalid - it certainly isn't as Iv'e checked and re-checked.
Then, removed the offending computer from the server and re-booted the server. Also removed the Connector software from the failed machine and re-booted.
Tried to re-install the software direct from the server, ( have no problems connecting to the server via RDC or by 'run \\server' or by Windows Explorer,) and during install, the installation asks me for my password!. As it won't accept my password, I now have a machine with no Connector software on it.
Does anyone know where the password is stored, or how I can delete the offending password?
I have substituted a 'known good' machine on the offending network connection and it performs perfectly. I also, before removing the connector software, tried discovery.exe, but it also connected to the server, wanted my password, which again, it wouldn't accept! Grrrrr.
I don't know whether to wipe the server and do a complete re-install, but that feels a bit drastic when 6 other machines are running just fine.
Many thanks for any suggestions,
Colin

Your administrator password has been lost or changed then. The console uses the same administrator password as when you plug a keyboard into your home server and type your password. If you can't remember it or figure it out, you will have to do a Server Reinstall which will keep your data, your backups, but loses users, add-ins and settings.Wednesday, June 6, 2007 10:59 PMModerator

I'm not exactly sure what is going on, but try deleting the following from the registry on the failed computer and then reinstall the Connector software:
HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Windows Home Server

Evening,
I've deleted the reg key, no change!
It just is frustrating that one machine will just 'give up' with no noticable reason and then be unable to re-install the Connector Software.
I guess I'll probably just leave it for now as RC1 requires a new re- installation and try again then.
Thanks,
Colin

Where and how does it ask for the password during the install? Is the question actually in the Windows Home Server Connector or is it a network dialog box?Thursday, May 31, 2007 11:12 PMModerator

Good morning,
It asks for the Password during the re-installation of the Connector software.
It start, runs and installs files, then says 'connecting to Server', I guess it then finds it and then pops up the password box.
The password hint is the correct one for the original password, but, after entering the password, I'm told 'password is incorrect'.
I would guess that the password must be stored on the Server and is possible corrupted?
I have tried installing the Connector software both directly from the Server/Software shared folder and also from a CD.

Colin

I wonder if the connector is actually connecting to another device. It should not be storing that password there. Try installing the connector software with your network disconnected. It should ask to search again or to find it manually, select manually. When it asks for the Windows Home Server name, type, "Server". Connect your network cable back in, wait till it connects to your network, (verify by opening Internet Explorer and seeing if your internet works again). Click next and see if that works.
Also, make sure your dates and times are correct on both the Windows Home Server and your home computer.

I have been having the same problem. my laptop just quit connecting to the server through the connector software. the on difference is that the backups still occur successfully. I was going to wait till RC1 to trouble shoot it though.Wednesday, June 6, 2007 4:30 PM

Joel,
Thanks for that,
I'll try it when I get home and post the results.

I've actually had the same problem. I turned off my WHS for about 2 weeks while I was away. I came back and turned the server on. My computers still back up to the WHS, I can browse the drives and grab the files from the network but when I try to logon to the server via, RDP, the Connector Software or locally on the computer the password does not work. I know what the password is, it has not changed yet I can't connect.
BTW I'm running the version that was before the CTP version. I wonder if there was a timebomb on it that I ran into?

The version before CTP is Beta 2 and is no longer supported. I would however, wait for RC to upgrade your Windows Home Server.
Has anyone else that is having this problem tried my steps from above? Also, what kind of password box is popping up and asking you to authenticate? Is this a network authentication or the console?

Joel,
I just tried your steps and I still have the same problem.
To answer your question if I plug a mouse / keyboard into the Home Server and try to log on directly it fails with a invalid password. If I try through the Windows Home Server Console I also get a message that says "The password is incorrect. Please retype your password. Letters in passwords must be typed using the correct case." I know that this password has never changed, that's why this bothers me.
However I can go to \\Server and log on, copy files down or up without a problem so I know that the connectivity is there. Unfortunatly the two accounts I made on the server do not have rights to logon locally.

I just wanted to clarify my situation. The only thing that is not connecting is the conector software. I can connect to all the shares and I can connect sing a remote desktop connection. the conector software wont connect saying that the password is wrong i have gone in and set the password several times and it never works. hopefully tomorrow i can follow the above steps and see what happensThursday, June 7, 2007 6:29 AM

I'm having the same issue. Remote access works fine. Connecting to shares works fine. Just can't reinstall the connector software. After it askes for password, it gives a "unknown network error" and the installation quits.
Was working fine, however my Vista machine was crashing with a NVSTOR.SYS error every night when backing up. Thought it might be the connector software, so I uninstalled it and tried reinstalling. Now, no go.

Joel,
Tried your suggestion.
The Connector software runs and says it's installing files; it then pops up a box saying 'network connection unavailable' there is no option to search again or find it manually, the only option is the 'back' button on the installation dialog.
If I then re-start the installation with the network connected, I'm back to the 'wrong password' issue!
Can anyone comfirm, I'm sure I remember somewhere, being asked if I want to store the password locally, or on the Server; or am I getting mixed up with two other beta's I have running? If this memory is correct and related to WHS, where on the server are the passwords stored?.
I guess I could re-install the server software, but that feels like a sledgehammer/nut answer for something that needs to be fixed on what appears to be a number of different networks, going by the number of posts on here.
As the server is running headless and it's not convenient to be otherwise, I think I will await RC1 and will then install that on 'new' hardware and just try to fix this problem via a server re-install while I have the monitor/keyboard set up, prior to switching over to RC1.
Regards,
Colin.

I think you must be crossing betas, Colin - there isn't such an option with WHS. The question asked is about syncing the client machine passwords.Thursday, June 7, 2007 9:52 PM

Hey all,
Has there been any follow-up on this problem? I three machines that connect to my CTP release of WHS. I uninstalled the connector software from all three while troubleshooting a backup problem on the server. Now while trying to reinstall the connector software all three fail at the password dialog. Two are wired and one is wireless and nothing has changed on the server side regarding accounts etc. Shares are still accessable and logging in on the server itself still works fine.
Thanks for any help,
James

James,
I've continued to try and solve this over the days, but no luck!
As RC1 is due out shortly, I've resigned myself to waiting until then. I'm just sorry I deleted the original Connector software, as I reckon there must have been a way to get it to re-connect.
Roll on RC1,
Colin
