Firewall will NOT turn on after Onecare Beta Update RRS feed

  • Question

  • I run a genuine Windows XP home edition SP2

I believe Onecare updated itself and it told me to reboot. So I did reboot and after that, a balloon popped up from OneCare saying that Firewall is turned off and the Onecare icon was colored red.

Onecare gave me the option to "Turn on Firewall" but it said it couldnt and said I needed to turn on Windows Firewall in order to use onecare firewall or something.

So I went to security center and clicked firewall and the option to turn on Firewall was greyed out..
(Meaning the option that said "Turn on Windows Firewall (Recommended)

I've tried all the solutions that people have written over the net and in this forum including the trouble shooting solutions found on the following websites.

  • My firewall is turned off, the Firewall control panel window says it is controlled by group policy, but I am a standalone user; I'm not part of a group.  Any ideas on how to get it turned back on?

If you are using OneCare, the firewall in Windows is turned off by Group Policy. All settings for the firewall are then handled by OneCare. You would open OneCare to change firewall settings. Is your OneCare status red and the error states that the firewall can't start?

Are you using OneCare 1.6 or the 2.0 Beta?

AkiKuchi and others posting in this thread,

First of all, thanks for participating in the beta! As Stephen mentioned, while OneCare is installed, Windows Firewall is disabled by group policy and OneCare's firewall is used. That being said, if your OneCare firewall is encountering an issue, that's something we would like to know more about. Creating a support log and sending it through Connect as per Stephen's earliest instructions above will help us find out more about the problem, and we'd appreciate the opportunity to do that. Contacting support should also assist you in solving the problem on your machine.

    Thanks again,

    -John

  • I was running the beta on three computers.  Love what you're doing.

However, my firewall conked out completely on two of the three computers....  The one's that were ethernet connected to my wi-fi router are the machines that quit turning on the firewall, if that's a clue.

The wireless computer is just ticking along with the beta WLOC.

Had to go back to released version on the wired machines.

  • i' wondering if you found a way to turn your firewall back on? I'm having the same problem but my program is windows vista preminum and i tried the same options as you did with no success.

Every time i log on , windows one care is prompting me to turn on my firewall. When i click the button to turn firewall on , a prompt comes up telling me onecare is not responding and to contact support. I've tried to turn on my firewall manually and once i try to apply my new settings it prompt my to contact support. I turned on my windows firewall but my one care firewall goes from green to red everytime i log on my laptop computer. Can you help me to turn on my onecare firewall?
