How can I get started? RRS feed

  • Question

  • Hi

We have machine with Windows Server 2008 R2 Standard installed.  I would like to know what else should I install to start a MS-MPI programming. Is there any tutorial or Manual about this? I search the web, but could not found what I needed.

    Any help is appreciated. Thanks.

  • Hi Linfa,

    To answer your questions:

    1) What's the difference between "Windows HPC server 2008 R2 SDK" and "HPC Pack 2008 SDK with SP1"?  I can only find download link of the later one on http://www.microsoft.com/hpc/en/us/default.aspx . And it seems to me all the MPI include files and libs are included. Are they the same?

       - Windows HPC server 2008 R2 SDK is newer version compared to  "HPC Pack 2008 SDK with SP1".
       - Windows HPC server 2008 R2 SDK can be found in the above web site by clicking "download windows HPC server 2008 R2 Beta". it will go to link
    https://connect.microsoft.com/HPC/content/content.aspx?ContentID=6923&wa=wsignin1.0

    2) What's the difference between "Windows HPC server 2008 R2" and "Microsoft HPC Pack 2008"? Are they the same and the successor to the "Microsoft Compute Cluster Pack" ?

       - Windows HPC server 2008 R2 is successor of Microsoft HPC Pack 2008.

       - Microsoft HPC has 3 versions, the following are ordered in year order:
             a)  2006, V1,
    Microsoft Compute Cluster Pack,
             b)  2008, V2,
    Microsoft HPC Pack 2008
             c)  2009, V3 Beta1, Windows HPC server 2008 R2

    3) Can I install the SDK on Window XP 64 machine and develop the MS-MPI program on it ( but run on Windows server 2008 machine ) ?
       yes

    4) How are they licensed? Do I need to pay for it even I have Windows Server 2008 R2 Standard installed?
You may use our eval version to do MPI development now. see

    http://www.microsoft.com/hpc/en/us/default.aspx

    2) To run MSMPI on multiple machines, install Windows HPC server 2008 R2. it is available on the above web site.

    3) We have a whitepaper on how to use MSMPI. it is on
    http://www.microsoft.com/hpc/en/us/default.aspx

    4) a simle hello world MPI example can be found on web like
