Basic disks versus dynamic disks - is one type better to use with WHS? RRS feed

  • Question

  • Is it better to use basic disks or dynamic disks for WHS?  Can a dynamic disk be used for the WHS system files (sys)? The documentation about drive types/volume types is not geared to newbies like me.

  • Per this Knowledgebase article , the use of dynamic disks with Windows Home Server is not only "not supported", it's known to cause problems.
I'm not on the WHS team, I just post a lot. :)

  • Not sure which is used by WHS, but, if you are using WHS as intended, you don't have an option to pick.  Adding additional disks for the storage pool is done by using the WHS console.

  • Thanks for the reply.  I was adding a 1.5 TB disk to my WHS computer and disk wizard popped up to format the disk.  Somehow (am sure it was an errant click on my part), the disk got formatted as a dynamic disk.  When I realized what happened, I removed the disk from my WHS computer, popped it into an external drive enclosure and reformatted as a basic disk using my Windows 7 laptop.  I then re-installed into my WHS computer.  No problems encountered.  Will definitely avoid dynamic disks from now on.
