Windows 7 asking for activation key again RRS feed

  • Question

  • Now this only happenned a couple of hours ago. I thought it was maybe Id copped a virus so i done the regular scans and then rebooted.

    Still asking the same.

why is it doing this? Its a legit copy bought with me computer from Dell and has worked well for the last couple of years.

needless to say im very wary of entering anything as i dont know if it is Microsoft asking and i dont want to give anyone access to my OS.

You seem to have simply neglected to activate your installation - everything else looks fine.
Your installation appears to be a Retail FPP copy of Win 7 Home Premium - is this what you were expecting?
DELL would NOT be supplying Retail copies of Windows, except by special order (with high extra cost!)

You need to check your COA sticker product Key against the Key shown here - Your machine is waaay too old to be able to legitimately use a DELL key for Windows - it could not possibly be valid, since the machine was built in 2007.

I can guarantee that the Key used here is not one that came with the computer originally.
The machine is too old for it to have been part of the 'free Upgrade' offer - and would be using a different PID if it were.
Did you buy this machine from a reseller, or direct from Dell?
What does the COA Sticker on the machine itself have to say about the Windows version and edition?
If as you say, you have the Upgrade disk, you should have a Key for it on a sticker in the case with the disk - does that Key agree with the one in the report?

  • This was bought direct from Dell.com here in the uk... the ened of the partial key shown there is the same as the key in the extra disc i have with me here though the sticker on the machine does say its Vista but the upgrade disc i installed and came with the machine is the Win 7 upgrade.

do i just re-enter the key that came with the disc again?

    I doubt that would work
I  say again - the Upgrade disk did NOT come with the machine!
    However -  that's irrelevant.
First, just try activating the machine normally - click on Start, and in the Search box, type
SLUI 9 and hit the Enter key.
    Attempt online activation from there.

If it fails, what error message do you get?

VERY simple, really - you neglected to activate the installation within the 30-day period allowed.

Please post another MGADiag report, so that we can sign off on it.
