vista 64 the security processor reported a system file mismatch error RRS feed

  • Question

  • Hi, my laptop got a virus about 12 months ago. In my attempts to remove it, the partition manager went screwy and I ended up needing to do a full re-partition, re-format and re-install. Because I'm lazy, I parked the laptop aside for about 12 months. After a concerted nagging campaign, I decided I'd do a re-install. Windows re-installed fine, and I validated it online as soon as I installed Avast anti-virus. I then sequentially applied the 108 windows updates. However, I'm now getting rather annoying popup messages saying "An unauthorized change was made to Windows", the specific error being "the security processor reported a system file mismatch error". I did a search and I've arrived here. I downloaded the diagnostic tool and ran it. It is reporting an invalid license. How can this be? I have the disc and proof of license right in front of me. Please help!

Hi, I installed SP1 plus about 50 updates, then SP2 with another handful of updates on top of that. During all that time, the pesky popup did NOT appear. Aero is working fine as well. After SP2, I re-installed Avast and did a full scan. No problems there either. I did the full chkdsk and sfc per your instructions. Neither reported any issues. The popup problem has so far not manifested itself in any way. The system seems stable.

The latest results of MGADiag.exe are shown below:

The TTS from yesterday is still there. However, if the annoying popup is no longer appearing, I'm happy that the problem is resolved. However, if you strongly believe that the TTS remains a problem, and may cause me further issues down the line, I will take the necessary steps to re-format and re-install and get the version up to SP2 (+updates) before I install Avast.

Again, thanks for your input up to this point.

With tampers present, it's impossible for the system to properly authenticate itself - even if it currently shows no error messages, it's highly likely that it will soon do so, and once (and even before) that happens, all bets are off as to the eventual resolution, and the safety of your data and online identities.

I really do recommend resolving this issue before proceeding with any sort of normal use of the system.

You have a problem (bet you never realised that, huh?)

Vista is in, what we call a 'Mod-Auth' Tamper state.  There are 2 types of Mod-Auth tampers.

    1)    A critical system file was modified On Disk - What this means is that the file, located on the hard drive, was modified in some way. This can be caused by a malicious program (spyware, malware, virus) or by manual file modification (by a user of the system). There is also a very small chance that an Update may fail in mid-update and cause this type of issue. As a safety mechanism, Updates are made so that if they fail, they roll back any updating that was done before the failure, but there is an off-chance that the roll back did not occur.

    2)    A critical system file was modified In Memory - What this means is the file itself (on the hard drive) is un-modified, but the code, from that file, running in the system, was modified in some way and is caused by a running program that is incompatible with Vista.

Because there is No Mismatched files listed under the "File Scan Data-->" line of your Diagnostic Report, we know that your issue is an In Memory Mod-Auth and therefore caused by an incompatible program. This means there is a program install and Running that is trying to access parts of the OS that Vista does not allow, which by definition, means it is incompatible with Vista.

NOTE: We have seen an increase in this type of issue and we believe it is unlikely that software writers are still making programs that are incompatible with Vista. Instead, we believe that a majority of the issues are being caused by Malware that are doing the same things (on purpose) as incompatible programs do (by accident).

In addition to why a Mod-Auth occurs, it's also important to understand how Vista detects a Mod-Auth event. There is a Service that runs in Vista that detects a Tamper to a Critical System file. But this Service runs randomly, so if you were to install an incompatible program and run it, Vista (most likely) would not immediately enter a Mod-Auth  State and it could take some time for the Mod-Auth to be detected. The important point to note is that the moment Vista detects the Mod-Auth, you know that the program that is causing the Mod-Auth, is currently running.

Below I have provided a number of steps to help you identify the program that is causing the tamper:

First, go to http://support.microsoft..com/kb/931699/ and confirm that you do not have any of the programs known to cause this type of issue.

Second, in your Diagnostic report above, you can see the line that starts with 'TTS Error:' followed by a bunch numbers: M:20110210211822530-This is the Tamper Time Stamp and it breaks down like this:

(year)  (month) (day) (time in 24format) (millisecond)
    M: 2011    02    10        2118                        22530-

Note: I also see a "T" type Tamper Time Stamp. The "T" stands for Trusted Store Tamper. Once you remove the program that is causing the In Memory Mod-Auth tamper, the Trusted Store tamper may be resolved as well. But such a combination is likely to indicate a Malware infection. To be on the safe side, we strongly suggest scanning your system with the Anti-Virus program of your choice as well as with the OneCare Safety Scanner for Vista (http://onecare.live.com/site/en-us/center/whatsnew.htm), and also with MalwareBytes Anti-malware (www.malwarebytes.org)

Now that you know the time of the tamper, you can now try to connect that time with a program.

    1)    Login to Vista and select the option that launches an Internet Browser

    2)    Type into the browser address bar: %windir%\system32\perfmon.msc and hit Enter

    3)    When asked if you want to Open or Save this file, select Open

    4)     In the left hand panel, click Reliability Monitor

    5)    Click on the “System Stability Chart” above the date 10th Feb

    6)    Below the chart, in the “System Stability Report” section look at the report titled "Software (Un)Installs for 10th Feb 2011"

    7)    Look for any program that shows "Application Install" in the 'Activity' column.

    8)    Since the process that detects Tampers runs randomly, it can take up to 3 days for the process to detect the tamper and set Vista to a Tamper State. Because of this, please repeat steps 5) thru 7) for the dates 07-09 Feb  (or around the date the issue first occurred)

This could tell you what programs were installed on or around the Tamper date and should help you narrow down the possible programs that could be causing the issue. Unfortunately, if you installed the program at some time in the past, but didn’t run it till now, this process may not be helpful.  The removal of any application you may have installed recently could go a long way to troubleshooting this issues.

Note: Since everyone has different programs installed on their computer, it is extremely hard for support to figure out what program is causing the problem, but if you still need assistance in identifying the Incompatible Program, please create a no cost support request at http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?linkid=52029

Also Note: it has been found that Malware, such as Viruses and Trojans, can also be incompatible with Vista and can cause an In Memory Mod-Auth. A number of users (that were experiencing your same issue) have confirmed that a Malware infection was the cause. If you follow the above steps and cannot find a program that is causing the Mod-Auth, you may want to investigate if a Virus, Worm or Trojan may be to blame. You can contact PC Safety, which is a Microsoft group, which provides free assistance with Malware infections. I encourage you to use the ‘Windows Live Safety Scan for Windows Vista’ (http://onecare.live.com/site/en-us/center/whatsnew.htm) before contacting PC Safety.

  • Many thanks for the reply. Just to answer some of the above:

The only 3rd party software on the laptop is Avast Anti-virus, and Nvidia control panel. I wont be installing any other software until this issue is resolved.

Immediately after Vista was installed, I connected the laptop to the internet to authenticate the license key. As soon as this was done (successfully), the laptop was disconnected from the web. Avast was then installed from a pen drive. When that was done, the laptop was re-connected the interet and Windows Update identified 100+ updates. The updates were installed in batches of 10. It was only when 50 or 60 updates were applied did the pesky popup appear.

Another aspect of the laptop is it a dual-boot system with XP (64 bit). This was re-installed successfully after the original disc re-partition and re-format. Avast anti-virus is also installed on this OS. I've done a full deep system scan of the entire PC and it has not reported back any infected files.

Finally, Windows update applied a couple of more patches yesterday evening. Just now, I ran MSDiag.exe again, and am now getting a different report log:

The TTS error is still there, but at least this time it is saying that the copy of Windows is genuine. Another popup has just appeared stating that "Windows Aero is no longer working: You may be a victim of software counterfeiting."

I have no idea why this is happening. The laptop hardware has not changed at all since the first time the license key was validated (about 3 years ago). I need help from Microsoft with this to make this issue go away. Thanks again for the quick response, I look forward to your reply.

Many thanks for the reply.

The highlighted error message is a sign that the Licensing Store is corrupted -
Your mention of AVAST is interesting - it seems that some number of this type of problem have also had AVAST installed.
It would be worth as a test uninstalling Avast, running its removal tool, and then running another MGADiag report to see if the tampers go away. (post back the results - you may still need to repair the licensing store)

You should then install SP1 and SP2 to the system, and run Windows Updates to get the machine up-to-date before reinstalling AVAST or another AV.

  • I've just uninstalled Avast and rebooted. I've re-run MGADiag.exe:

    I've just uninstalled Avast and rebooted. I've re-run MGADiag.exe:

The tampers are still present :(

What's interesting is that the date of the tamper has been updated to the current day, and that the Licensing store seems to have been able to repair itself, which I would think indicates that we may be on the right track.

Please install Service Pack 1 either from the offline installer, or from Windows Updates, and run another MGADiag report.
This may update or repair the system files concerned, or their registry entries.

Still got the Tampers present :(

I doubt very much that this will work, but it needs to be tried anyhow....

    1) run a CHKDSK to check the file system:-
            Click on Start
            In the Search box, type
            CMD
wait for the Search to find the response, then right-click on it, and select Run as Administrator
Accept the UAC prompt, then at the Command prompt, type
            CHKDSK   C:  /F
            hit the Enter key
You will be told that the system needs to reboot to do the check - accept the warning, and then reboot.
    2) Run the System File Checker
            Click on Start
            in the Search box, type
            CMD.EXE
wait for the system to find what should be the only file related, and right-click on it - select Run As Administrator.
Accept the UAC prompt if you get one, and then in the window that comes up, type

            SFC   /SCANNOW

            and hit the Enter key
wait for the scan to finish - it'll take a while - and then reboot, twice!

run the MGADiag report again, and post back with the new report.

If that doesn't  work, and in view of the fact that you say there's nothing else installed on the system, then I would recommend a Custom/Clean install - then install SP1 and SP2 before your AV, using MGADiag at each step to check that the Tampers haven't re-appeared.

  • Hi, I installed SP1 plus about 50 updates, then SP2 with another handful of updates on top of that.

With tampers present, it's impossible for the system to properly authenticate itself - even if it currently shows no error messages, it's highly likely that it will soon do so, and once (and even before) that happens, all bets are off as to the eventual resolution, and the safety of your data and online identities.

I really do recommend resolving this issue before proceeding with any sort of normal use of the system.
