Unautorized changes (Windows Vista not validated) RRS feed

  • Question

  •

My Norton said it had a new version for me so I updated. After a restart windows told me " An unauthorized change was made to windows" when I clicked learn more it then told me my version was validated.

I have tried safe mode and reverting to known good configrations but this has not worked.

I have no start button to use from a normal start, if I click learn more I get windows internet explorer. If I click close it goes to a switch user screen, which I am the only one.

  • Hello Martyn,

Your Vista is suffering from an "On Disk" Mod-Auth tamper issue. What this means is that one or more of Vista's Critical Systems files have either been Modified or have become Corrupt. In your case the files that are Modified/Corrupt are (the list can also be seen in your Diagnostaic Report under the "File Scan Data-->" line):

    user32.dll[6.0.6000.16438]
    msoert2.dll[6.0.6000.16480]
    w32topl.dll[hr = 0x80070714]

Normally, to fix the issue, I would look at the long number after the file name (example: [6.0.6000.16438]) and this would tell me that fil's Version. I would then look up any updates that had that version of that file. I would then have you install the update and it would replace the bad file with a Unmodified/Uncorrupt copy of the file.

Unfortunatly, this will not work in your situation because the file w32topl.dll a) is so Modified/Corrupt, that the Diagnostic Report can not read it's version number b) even if I could see the version number, I do not believe it has been included in any Windows Update.

I do have 3 other options for you (for either of the below option, I highly recommend backing up any importent files):

    1) Restore Vista to a past Restore Point (http://support.microsoft.com/kb/936212/en-us

    2) Since you have a Retail copy of Vista, You could try doing a Repair using the retail DVD (http://support.microsoft.com/kb/936212/en-us)

    3) If the Repair doesn't fix one or more of the Modified/Corrupted files, then you would need to reinstall. (http://support.microsoft.com/kb/918884/en-us)

If you have any problem or receive any errors, I recommend contacting Vista Support at http://support.microsoft.com/oas/default.aspx?gprid=11732

    Thank you,

To Pierre56: I deleted your post because a) Your issue is not the same as the original poster's b) troubleshooting more then one issue in the same thread becomes way to confusing for all parties involved.  Please create your own thread for your own issue.

  • You can reset your Windows Vista activation by performing the following:

    1. Click on the Start button and in the Start Search box type in:  slui.exe 4

    2. Press the Enter key on your keyboard.

    3. Select your Country.

    4. Follow the instructions for phone activation.

    5.  Once completed, restart your computer.

  • This got me to the point where I could ring Microsoft, but they could still not reactivate me. After an hour they said they will need to check into it and get back to me.

It seemed that all vista programs would not run eg; Control panel or any games. My computer will open.

We tried going into msconfig and disabling all startup programs.

Running services from the start buttom got me to Software licensing this showed that service status was stopped. When I clicked start I got the error code 0xc004d401

  • Hello Martyn,

Your Vista is suffering from an "On Disk" Mod-Auth tamper issue. What this means is that one or more of Vista's Critical Systems files have either been Modified or have become Corrupt. In your case the files that are Modified/Corrupt are (the list can also be seen in your Diagnostaic Report under the "File Scan Data-->" line):

    user32.dll[6.0.6000.16438]
    msoert2.dll[6.0.6000.16480]
    w32topl.dll[hr = 0x80070714]
