Right now your computer has a Volume Licensing installation of Office 2007 Professional Plus, and that installation was done with an Invalid Volume Licensing Key (VLK).  An Invalid product key means that the key was made with a pirating program known as a Key Generator and was never issued by Microsoft.

Office 2007 Pro Plus is a Volume Licensing only edition of Office 2007, should never be sold as a consumer product, and is quite often marketed by software pirates as the consumer license for Office 2007 Professional.

I would encourage you to contact the seller of this software to demand that you receive the full retail license for Office 2007 Professional that you paid for, or a full refund.  You can also view the Office Genuine Offer FAQ to see if you qualify for the discounted or complimentary replacement of your nongenuine Office:  http://www.microsoft.com/genuine/downloads/FAQ.aspx?displaylang=en#ID0EKNAC  If you decide to participate in the one of these offers, please initiate participation by clicking on the Learn More Online link in the notices you are seeing on your computer.

One other possibility is that at one time your computer did have a Genuine installation of Office installed, but for some reason it was replaced with the current installation which is nongenuine.  This could have happened if you took your computer to a repair shop and they reinstalled Windows and/or some or all of your programs.  You Get Genuine once again by uninstalling the current nongenuine installation of Office and using your Genuine Microsoft hologrammed Office installation CDs, along with the genuine Product Key found on your Office Edition's Certificate of Authenticity, to put back the genuine installation of Office you may have already had on the computer.

  • Thanks for that I will try as you suggest. Something of note that may help.

Prior to originally successfully installing the software I made a working/backup copy of Office 2007 as a precaution, my usual practice. I encountered a registry problem associated with another application later and had to uninstall Office as part of the resolution. When I tried to reinstal the Office suite from the Microsoft original CD I got the error message that the software was installed on another computer. However I tried to instal my working copy and it all went fine. Is it possible that in these operations something happened to give the not genuine indications?

    Hi Dan,

This is exactly what happened to me. I have my original Office 2003 disks. Just to clarify, all I need to do is to uninstall the existing non-Genuine version and install my version? Do I need to make backups of the data? I just want to make sure that no documents or emails are lost.

  • Hello bantcast,

You may have received a message about Office being installed on another computer if you installed and then tried to activate the software.  However, activation takes place AFTER installation so such a message would not have before installation, and would not have prevented you from installing Office.

Can you describe the materials that you have, as you mentioned "the Microsoft original CD"?  Do not post the product key.

  • Hello tpmjr42,

I have not had occasion to use this method myself, but you may want to consider trying to just chnage the Product Key from nongenuine to genuine using the info in this MS KB article:  http://support.microsoft.com/kb/895456

Otherwise, my suggestion would be to backup any data you can't afford to lose, then uninstall the nongenuine Office, restart twice, then install the genuine Office.

After installation restart, then visit www.micosoft.com/genuine and click on Validate Office to ensure that the new Office installation validates normally.  Then visit Microsoft Update to get any and all applicable updates.  Office 2003 is up to SP3 plus many more security updates after that.

Occasionally those who replace a nongenuine Office 2003 with a genuine installation will still see the notices about nongenuine software.  If so, first rerun the mgadiag utility and look in the OGA section to make sure the report says your Office is genuine.  If the report says genuine, then it's almost always a case where the Office license file (part of Office product activation) has been altered or corrupted by the nongenuine installation.  To correct this for Office 2003, run the MS FixIt utility in Method 2 of the MS KB:  http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx/kb/903275/en-us  Finally, restart and revalidate at www.microsoft.com/genuine.

  • Hello bantcast,

Office Professional 2007 when purchased in a retail package is exactly what individual consumers should be purchasing, because this is a perpetually licensed product that comes with direct Microsoft tech support.

OTOH,  Office Professional Plus 2007 is only sold by Microsoft under its Volume Licensing programs to organizations that would be buying a lot of copies and would be needing the group collaboration features only available in Pro Plus (and in Enterprise).  Individual consumers should never be sold Pro Plus.

Note that your packaging and your discs say that you purchased Office 2007 Professional, yet the discs installed Office Professional Plus 2007. This is very frequently reported here in the forums by other posters like you and is a favorite tactic of the software counterfeiters, because up until the most recent release of the OGA program, this tactic was very effective.

I would encourage you to submit your materials as counterfeits.

  • I have submitted the software to Microsoft. Now ROCK and HARDPLACE the compimentary version if supplied will be 4-6 weeks. What do I do in the interim. Will my current software continue to run but not get updates. I have also put in a chaser message with Amazon concerning the supplier.

  • Hello bantcast,

Your nongenuine installation of Office will be "marked as nongenuine."

That means you will see some nag screens when opening Office programs and there will be an additonal menu item that provides links to Get Genuine.  No documents or data will be affected in any way, and no program functionality will be lost.

Please come back here to let us know how you do with the submission! :-)
