Folder Default Shares Duplication RRS feed

  • Question

  • Hey all, I've got a particular issue with my Windows Home server 2011.

    To quickly explain the situation, I have a failing hard drive which the data was moved to a brand new drive with a new letter. After that was done, and the server restarted, the console gives me an error telling me that predefined shares are missing and gave me an option to recreate them.

    What I did is I went through the wizard to recreate them, but pointed it directly to the folder on the new drive I pointed it to. Once the operation was complete, I could once again access the folders from any client computer, but now the share is duplicated (in my case, I see my "music" folder twice, and they both point at the same place).I've went ahead and checked the SMB share configurations by remote connecting to the server, and everything checks out fine there. Only 1 share of music is marked by SMB on the server.

    Anyone ever experienced this issue and may have a clue in on how to possibly fix the share duplication?

  • Before you did your edit, I was going to suggest removing the HomeGroup. It adds nothing to WHS and overrides WHS settings such as limiting access to shares.

  • what I would do is backup the shares you want to keep to somewhere (or zip them) and remove all the shares. Delete all the share directories. Create the shares again. unzip or copy your files back to the newly created share directories. If that doesn't work, it's probably something persisting on the connector. Uninstall it and reinstall the connector.

  • Hi,

    I really wish I can delete the shares, but these are the default ones that Windows Home Server creates, which I cannot delete.
    Pertaining the connector, I actually don't use the server connector to access my files. I really just use the shared SMB folders through the homegroup.

    <EDIT>

    This seems to be an issue with HomeGroup folder share duplication.

    By accessing the serve with UNC share, I can correctly see that the folder in question only appears once, and so does the share management console on the server. However, in the homegroup, it is duplicated, and both link to the same place. Attempting to leave and rejoin the Homegroup from the server did not resolved the issue either.

  • Did you do a Windows copy to move the files or did you use the homeserver utility to move the folders? I have used the utilities to move folders several times and never had duplicate folders/shares
