Genuine problem due to MS cleverness RRS feed

  • Question

  • I recently had a harddisk start to fail.  I image copied my master drive over to a new harddisk.  Now I am getting a message that it fails the Windows Genuine Advantage test.  Since I have my licensed copy of Windows XP in hand (in fact I have 4 licensed copies in my house), I figured I could go to the Windows Genuine site, click on the validate product button, and move on with my life.  Unfortunately, when I click the button I am sent to a Chinese language Microsoft site.  Yes....because I live in China, some clever programmer felt I must speak Chinese based on my IP address.  Well, I may speak a little, but I don't read enough to understand the page displayed.  Help?  My only thought was to try to find a way to use a proxy server in the US to fool those clever MS programmers.

  • Hello Dufur,

Download and run the utility at this link http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?linkid=52012 , then click the Windows tab, Copy to Clipboard, then paste the report into a New Post on this Forum.  This will help us analyze your problem so we may provide you with a solution.

Step 2 is tell us about the COA. Tell us:

    1. What edition of Windows XP is it for, Home, Pro, or Media Center?
    2. Does it read "OEM Software" or "OEM Product" in black lettering?
    3. Or, does it have the computer manufacturer's name in black lettering?
    4. DO NOT post the Product Key.
    5. Please also provide a short description of the issue you are experiencing.

NOTE: The data collected with the Genuine Diagnostics Tool does NOT contain any information that can personally identify you and can be fully reviewed, by you, before being posted.

    Thank you,
