SyncToy 2.1 - Copying/Duplicating folder pairs? RRS feed

  • Question

  • Hello,

Is there any way to duplicate a given folder pair, to then change its name and destination path?
I have ten pairs that Echo over to a backup drive, and I've recently acquired another drive that I'd like to put in rotation.
Is there any way other than manually recreate the pairs? Manually editing SyncToyDirPairs.bin seems out of the question.

  • I have a similar problem. I found SyncToy a few days ago while setting up an ethernet network to keep all my important files on both machines and in synch, which i've been doing with small USB hard drives to make backups and move files between them ... with the ethernet network added only very recently.

I have SyncToy installed on both PCs and can't remember for sure if i did that myself on the second machine, but, because i didn't think it would matter, i set up my Folder Pairs on the "spare machine" and i can use the three functions to do anything i need because all i'd be doing is keeping the two PCs in synch, but when i'm on what will be my "daily driver PC" it has SyncToy installed but there are no folder pairs set up.  I set them up on the other machine which will spend most of the time turned off ... after i get everythiung running and all the bugs fixed after totally reinstalling Windoze on one of them.

I expected that it would have some sort of Export Pairs function to save that info to a file so i could then move that file over to my second PC and then Import those pairs and then i could run SyncToy from either machine, but i now have to do all my synching from the slower and much older PC which is basically a spare.  All my shared folders have those little files put there by SyncToy so all i need to do is tell my copy of SyncToy on the second , newer, machine to use the same folder pairs it has already set up on (really) both machines.  All of that info is there. There seems no way to copy it over.

It seems like an awful amount of unnecessary work to set up all my folder pairs on every machine that i'd like to keep synchronized.  But without an Export-Pairs function to run on my first machine, i can't import the folder pairs using the software. So it looks like i need to set up the same folder pairs on *both" machines, which seems very stupid and totally unnecessary because all those shared folders have the synctoy files in them on both machines.

But then i started thinking that maybe the software would get confused if there were two sets of synctoy sentinel files in each of the shared folders, where it would use one set if i was running SyncToy on one machine and the other set of sentinel files if i was running synctoy on the other machine.  Will setting up my folder pairs on both machines cause problems because it will confuse it or overwrite them?

What to do?  What to do?

If i should only be running SyncToy on the "Master" PC, then i need to delete all the folder pairs i've already set up and do the whole process over again on my bigger and newer PC.

I just don't understand why they have a piece of software to synchronize files between two machines, but after it's set up to do that, it can onle used on that first machine and the second machine can't do any synching.  WHY???

All they need to do is add an Export/Import function like they have in pretty much anything in Windoze. I can export and import address book, settings, etc.  Why not folder pairs?

If they don't fix this they really ought to make a big warning to people installing it on two or more PCs that they need to first think about which machine they want to have their folder pairs on.  I had just assumed that it wouldn't matter, but it seems to be a major hassle.  Am I missing something????  Does anyone else think they ought to warn people about this?

And what if i go ahead and install my Folder Pairs on a second machine?  Will there be conflicts between both sets of folder pairs?

  • Hi -

I can certainly see the value in being able to import/export the folder pair configuration from one box to the other. Unfortunately - currently there is nothing to support this. I am not sure what you mean when you say install your folder pairs on a second machine since there no "install" as such. And yes - it is a limitation that you need to decide which machine you are going to use to run Synchronization on.

  • All the posts I see from the SyncToy team are 'Currently, it's a limitation.'That's it. There is not even a hint of the intention to provide a rather necessary feature. Whichever machine we use, there are some standard folders which everyone would want to backup - Like My documents/pictures/videos/favorites/development folders etc. etc. The more you work, the more folders you want to sync. - Outlook Profile/software settings/Firefox Profile.... Everytime I work on a new machine, I have to do it all manually ...
