Sometimes search is not that helpful... RRS feed

  • Question

  • Maybe it is late, maybe I'm tired, but all I can think of when I see:

    Search is your friend

Is, "Thumper, what did your father tell you?".

Try be to helpful or ignore the urge to add Search is your friend to a thread, it serves no purpose and adds nothing.

  • Actually, I do it occasionally too. Then I try to provide some actual assistance. Though it's tempting, when someone says "I'm getting a 'database consistency error', but I can't find anything in search that seems helpful." to just leave it at "go do a real search". (SME's how-to about that issue is the first result...)

With a bit of explanation what 'go do a real search' actually means I guess some might construe it as an attempt to be helpful.  Something like a link 'how to' would be great.

  • It may be heresy, but I tend to use the Advanced Search facility of Google, to find what I want on this site. (I've found it better and more accurate on just about every forum I read.
