Reactivation required for no apparent reason RRS feed

  • Question

  • I recently purchased a new laptop, and promptly reformatted the hard drive so I could customize the partitions.  When I reinstalled Windows Vista Home Premium that came with the laptop, I could not activate online and had to use the phone service.  Today, after no significant hardware changes (since first activation I've added a mouse and installed newer drivers, but no other hardware) Vista told me I had 3 days to reactivate my copy.  Again, I had to go through by phone because I couldn't do it online.  My Vista is now activated again, but I don't appreciate having to relay a 54 digit product ID twice and then type in the confirmation ID every couple of weeks.  How can I avoid having to reactivate for no reason / is there a way to allow me to activate over the internet? because I don't appreciate the hassle.

  • Same thing happened to me today. Had Vista Home Premium validated for almost 3 weeks now and today I noticed that the welcome center said that I had 3 days left to validate. I tried online but it did not work. I had to phone in and validate that way. I asked the girl on the phone about the problem buy she did not know anything. She told me to phone a toll free number that she gave me for Canada here to ask my question. I have not phoned yet because I noticed that a lot of other people having the same problem.

Micosoft where are you with a fix for this!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • This answers my exact question. A couple of days ago I posted in here asking if a new computer that comes preloaded with Vista (from Dell, for example) would require activation when you wipe the drive and reinstall the copy that comes with it.

A Microsoft mod deleted the question as being "off topic". Which obviously as much as confirmed that yes, they really are doing this to people. Lets see how long this thread lasts.

Glad to at least have an official confirmation. Needless to say I'll probably need to buy a Macbook Pro instead. I'm not crazy about being treated like a criminal, nor having a kill switch in my operating system.

  • If your question was deleted as off topic it's because this forum is for validation issues, which this is not.  I hope you can understand that we can't be cross-trained on every issue that might occur, so we can't answer general licensing questions which is what you posted.  Please check out this forum announcement for the many other places you can get assistance on Vista issues: http://forums.microsoft.com/Genuine/ShowPost.aspx?PostID=1165788&SiteID=25

    Thanks!

  • My hunch is that this KB http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx/kb/931573 might have something to do with your issue, but this is validation issues forum so please contact Product Support Services if you need further assistance.  Thank you!
