Help please. Genuine Windows failure is keeping Windows Updates from completing. RRS feed

  • Question

  • I have had this work computer for well over 2 years and my windows update (KB968930) continues to fail. I believe the problem is because the genuine windows validation process is not completing. I have not had issues like this in the past, but researching the problem led to the diagnostic passing everything except the last step labeled, genuine Microsoft software plug-ins connect with Microsoft validation servers. Troubleshooting that led me to run the next diagnostic which had the following results: Diagnostic Report (1.9.0027.0): ----------------------------------------- Windows Validation Data--> Validation Status: Genuine Validation Code: 0 Cached Online Validation Code: 0x0 Windows Product Key: *****-*****-JQMWD-2QJRJ-RJ34F Windows Product Key Hash: R8gPTEFMoOygFewoq/uOoWMpz68= Windows Product ID: 89583-OEM-7332157-00237 Windows Product ID Type: 2 Windows License Type: OEM SLP Windows OS version: 6.0.6002.2.00010300.2.0.003 ID: {01A19B6F-DA37-4181-977E-6EE153E479C9}(1) Is Admin: Yes TestCab: 0x0 LegitcheckControl ActiveX: N/A, hr = 0x80070002 Signed By: N/A, hr = 0x80070002 Product Name: Windows Vista (TM) Home Premium Architecture: 0x00000009 Build lab: 6002.vistasp2_gdr.101014-0432 TTS Error: Validation Diagnostic: Resolution Status: N/A Vista WgaER Data--> ThreatID(s): N/A, hr = 0x80070002 Version: N/A, hr = 0x80070002 Windows XP Notifications Data--> Cached Result: N/A, hr = 0x80070002 File Exists: No Version: N/A, hr = 0x80070002 WgaTray.exe Signed By: N/A, hr = 0x80070002 WgaLogon.dll Signed By: N/A, hr = 0x80070002 OGA Notifications Data--> Cached Result: N/A, hr = 0x80070002 Version: N/A, hr = 0x80070002 OGAExec.exe Signed By: N/A, hr = 0x80070002 OGAAddin.dll Signed By: N/A, hr = 0x80070002 OGA Data--> Office Status: 102 Microsoft Office Home and Student 2007 - 100 Genuine OGA Version: N/A, 0x80070002 Signed By: N/A, hr = 0x80070002 Office Diagnostics: 77F760FE-153-80070002_7E90FEE8-175-80070002_025D1FF3-364-80041010_025D1FF3-229-80041010_025D1FF3-230-1_025D1FF3-517-80040154_025D1FF3-237-80040154_025D1FF3-238-2_025D1FF3-244-80070002_025D1FF3-258-3_B4D0AA8B-920-80070057 There is a valid CoA sticker on the bottom of the laptop, but I'm not sure where that information is in the diagnostic log or which of the many numbers may be necessary to help troubleshoot this. I have tried running the validation tests in both Firefox and IE, and messing with Proxy and ActiveX settings, but can not resolve the validation process. Thanks for any assistance.

  • Darin,

Thank you for your reply.  I'm not really sure what to make of all this, but today instead of just the KB968930 update there were 4 more items and when I let the update run it completed all 5 successfully!  Thus, the entire reason for my problem is now resolved.  Out of curiosity I went back and reran the genuine check with:

    http://www.microsoft.com/genuine/diag/

and it still fails on the last step saying: the genuine Microsoft software plug-ins connect with Microsoft validation servers.

I know the software is genuine in that the laptop was purchased from Toshiba with the software installed plus the specific diagnostic log attached originally states that it passed and is genuine.  I guess the bottom line is until another problem presents itself am I going to consider this resolved, however, the genuine software tool not running automatically or via the servers technically is still an issue.  If I decide its necessary I will try your steps later given time.

    Thanks again for your help.

  • Hi Asheville Hoo,

I'm not seeing any issue in your Diagnostic Report which can sometimes indicate an issue with Vista's Licensing Store.  Please try the below steps to recreate the Store and it's Data.

    1) Open an Internet Browser window.
    2) Type: %windir%\system32 into the browser address bar.
    3) Find the file CMD.exe
    4) Right-Click on CMD.exe and select 'Run as Administrator'
    5) Type: net stop slsvc   (it may ask you if you are sure, select yes)
    6) Type: cd %windir%\ServiceProfiles\NetworkService\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\SoftwareLicensing
    7) Type: rename tokens.dat tokens.bar
    8) Type: cd %windir%\system32
    9) Type: net start slsvc
    10) Type: cscript slmgr.vbs -rilc (It may take a long time for this to complete, please be patient)
    11) Restart your computer twice.
    12) You may be required to enter the Product Key and/or Activate. Be sure to use the Product key listed on the sticker on the bottom of the PC and Activate using the By Phone process.

    Thank you,
