  • What you cannot do is use the copy of Windows from your broken computer on this computer.  It is an Advent OEM SLP copy that will not activate on an Acer motherboard because the flag in the BIOS is for the wrong make and model computer.  You just cannot transfer this type of Windows license to a different computer.  There is nothing anyone here can do to change that.  Put the original hard drive back in the Acer and then attach the Advent hard drive in an external drive.  That way you can copy your files.  Then put the hard drive from the Advent back into the Advent computer and fix the screen.

If you had a retail copy of Windows in the Advent you could do what you want, but not with a factory installed copy.  Advent paid a royalty for the copy of Windows and no where near the retail price.  Therefore the license is permanently assigned to the Advent.  As the license says,

    a. One Copy per Computer. The software license is permanently assigned to the computer with which the software is distributed. That computer is the "licensed computer."

Windows OEM versions cannot be moved across motherboards – that requires Retail licensing (it also frequently requires a repair install).
For what version and edition of Windows is the 5315 licensed, according to the COA sticker on the case?

To properly analyse and solve problems with Activation and Validation, we need to see a full copy of the report produced by the MGADiag tool (download and save to desktop - http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?linkid=52012 )
    Once saved, run the tool.
Click on the Continue button, which will produce the report.
To copy the report to your response, click on the Copy button in the tool (ignore any error messages at this point), and then paste (using either r-click/Paste, or Ctrl+V ) into your response.
      - **in your own thread**, please

Please also state the Version and Edition of Windows quoted on your COA sticker (if you have one) on the case of your machine, but do NOT quote the Key on the sticker!

Hi, thanks for the reply, here is the diagnostics report. the sticker at the back of my laptop is worn out but the windows edition is windows 7 home premium. Thank you once again

    Your machine is an Acer
The Win7 Key in use here is for a Dixon’s PC (Advent brand), and BIOS SLIC table is for Vista.
The machine was manufactured well before Windows 7 came out and cannot possibly have a valid Win7 branded OEM sticker on it.
Your installation of Office is also non-genuine.
You will have to reinstall the original OS that came with the machine, or purchase a new legal copy of Windows 7.

  • Thank you for your reply, from my first post i said that i had put my hard drive into my acer (aspire) laptop because the advent one had a broken screen (the original laptop is the advent, it came pre installed with windows 7 premium from currys). The sticker i was going to read for you is that of my advent. i did not (re)install any OS on either laptop, it only reconfigured itself when i transferred it. Plus the MS office was installed while the hard drive was on the advent (probably why it is coming up as non-genuine),I can swear it is genuine.

the hard drive that came with the acer had vista pre installed on it, and it has been safely tucked away in the advent laptop.

There's a readable sticker on the back of this acer which holds the product key (of the vista OS i presume) and some other code which is purely numbers.

What do i do now please?

If you had a retail copy of Windows in the Advent you could do what you want, but not with a factory installed copy.  Advent paid a royalty for the copy of Windows and no where near the retail price.  Therefore the license is permanently assigned to the Advent.  As the license says,

    a. One Copy per Computer. The software license is permanently assigned to the computer with which the software is distributed. That computer is the "licensed computer."

  • You're welcome.

That's not the way Windows 7 works.  It won't just shut down on you.  But you need to fix it.

  • Thanks you, once again.

Sorry, just one more question. When i return both hard drives to their respective laptops, will my windows 7 work as normal?

  • Should do - so long as you haven't messed it up too much by transferring it to another motherboard.
