What happens if a move a drive to a different controller? RRS feed

  • Question

  • Let's suppose I have six SATA drives using the motherboard on-board controller but I want to now move two of those drives to a separate PCIe SATA controller.

Can I just move the drives to the new controller and will WHS automatically know what happened?

Also, what about using two external USB hard drives and then later removing the hard drives from their enclosures and putting them directly onto the onboard (or PCIe) SATA controller?  (eg. and no longer using USB)

  • While moving internal drives (besides the system volume) should have no negative effect for the disk ID, the same cannot be said for migrating from external USB enclosure to internal (not sure why, maybe some enclosures have influence to the disk ID used to identify the drive).
So the best method for those would be in my opinion, to add an internal drive first, remove the external disk from storage pool and then add this internally. (Or continue to use it for backups.)
