WGA showing incorrect product key but can't change without access to start menu RRS feed

  • Question

  • Hi,

My computer crashed today and when I rebooted I got an error message saying that I was using an invalid product key even though my is totally valid. Below is my diagnostic report.  The product key listed differs from the one on the back of my machine so I'm assuming that it was reset or something when repairing from the crash.  I want to change the product key back to mine by rightclicking on "computer" in the start menu and then clicking on properties. But I currently have no access to the start menu (or any files).  The only way that I can access files is by opening them up as attachments from my browser.  Currently, my desktop background is blue with no files showing, no start menu or toolbars, and just an error message telling me I may be using pirated softwrae.

I can access my files if I reboot in safe mode but that doesn't help me that much because vista doesn't let you alter things like that in safe mode.

Anyone have any suggestions...would be MUCH appreciated.

    So my questions are
1.)  Is changing my product key the solution to my problem (i think it is but just wnt to be sure)
2.)  How can I change my product key with the access problems I'm having.

  • Hello syntaxd80,

I believe your issue is that the Licensing Store has become corrupt and usually this type of issue is fixed by following the below steps I would like you to try the below set of steps.  The first set will attempt to reset the Store and the second set will recreate it.  Try the first set and if that doesn't work, move on to the next.

    1) Click the option that launches an Internet Browser
    2) Type: %windir%\system32 into the address field
    3) Find the file cmd.exe
    4) Right-click on cmd.exe and select Run as Administrator
    5) Type: cscript %windir%\System32\slmgr.vbs /ilc %windir%\System32\licensing\ppdlic\Security-Licensing-SLC-ppdlic.xrm-ms
    6) Hit the Enter key
    7) Reboot twice

    1) Return to the cmd windows
    2) Type: net stop slsvc  (it may ask you if you are sure, select yes)
    3) Type: cd %windir%\ServiceProfiles\NetworkService\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\SoftwareLicensing
    4) Type: rename tokens.dat tokens.bar
    5) Type: cd %windir%\system32
    6) Type: net start slsvc
    7) Type: cscript slmgr.vbs -rilc (It may take a long time for this to complete, please be patient)
    8) Reboot Twice
    9) You may be required to enter the Product Key again and then Activate

Lastly, I have also included the Alternate steps to change the product key when you don't have access to the "Change Product Key" button.

    1)    Click the Start button

    2)    Type: slui.exe 3 and hit the Enter key

    3)    Type in the Product key from the sticker on your computer

    4)    Click the Next button.

    5)    You will be asked if want to Activate, click ok

    6)    It will attempt to Activate by the internet and will return an Invalid Key error (this is ok, continue to step 7)

    7)    Click the Start button

    8)    Type: slui.exe 4 and hit the Enter key

    9)    Select your location in the drop down menu and click the Next button

    10) The next screen provides the number to call to Activate by Phone

    Hope that helps,
    Darin MS
