Syncing P2P and avoiding L Desktop RRS feed

  • Question

  • Have some large folders that I don't want through the Live Desktop.

    1. I find it sluggish that the option to "not sync with desktop" when adding a folder from a device is greyed out in sync options, this makes me

    a) go to desktop first and create a identical folder to the one I wanted to sync from the device -> choose not to sync with desktop -> then go back to the device and choose to sync with that folder

    b) add the folder from the device, then go over to desktop and turn off syncing with desktop for that folder.

I've tested both, and was glad to find that the allocated space on the desktop got removed in alt. B, after turning of syncing with the desktop for that folder. BUT, from my mesh-meny on my device, I now see that I'm uploading -so far- 400MB, and the folder I'm synching is 700MB so I assume it's gonna continue for another 300MB.

As I'm currently not syncing this folder with another device, why is it uploading? From the used meeter, it isn't ending up on my desktop. Thought that syncing would now go P2P as I hooked up my 2nd device on that folder.

    Am I doing something wrong?

  • Hi Solav,

I don't know if "add the folder from the device, then go to the Live Desktop to turn off syncing with the Live Desktop for that folder" is a bad way of doing it, but it is certainly not a very convenient way to do it. ;)  Unfortunately, that is currently the way that it has to be done - so that part of your experience is expected.  (Being able to set "Don't sync this folder with the Live Desktop" from a UI on the device itself, however, is a popular feature request, and definitely something we're working on.  We recognize that the current way of doing it is cumbersome.)

As for why you're still seeing uploading: The only way to know for sure whether what you're seeing is expected or a bug would be to have you send us your Live Mesh logs (you could email them to lmprev@microsoft.com).  Of course, since you're syncing the folder with another device in your mesh, perhaps all you're seeing is the "upload" status of the data moving from the current device to any others that it's syncing with?  (Another popular customer request that we're working on is providing more, and more useful, information about anything currently synchronizing.)  You will still see a shortcut to that folder on your Live Desktop, but it will not have the data (which is why you're seeing that space given back to your Live Desktop quota).

So, it's possible that the uploading you're seeing is the folder(s) syncing with your other devices, but again, if you feel like it's really "uploading to nowhere" go ahead and send us your logs.

    Thanks,

    Ben.

  • Hi Solav,

We currently have an issue with folders set to sync P2P only (i.e., not with your Live Desktop), though that would not explain why the data seems to be uploading to your Live Desktop (though perhaps I've misunderstood your issue).  If you've set up the folder not to sync with the Live Desktop, but it is doing so anyway, please submit a bug with your logs attached (instructions are in an Announcement at the top of the forums).  If, on the other hand, I've misunderstood the issue you're having, please let me know.

    Thanks,

    Ben.

Is "add the folder from the device, then go over to desktop and turn off syncing with desktop for that folder." a bad way of doing the P2P-only-sync? Even though I went straight to my LD, LD had allready allocated space for the folder I added. When I turned off syncing with LD, the allocated space got freed up again, BUT for some reason my mesh on my device continued to upload an equal amount of MB as the folder I added - where I don't know, as it didn't turn up on my Live desktop and no other device were set to sync with that folder.

Is this normal behaviour, and I must expect this "uploading into nowhere"=D or should the uploading stop as I unchecked the syncing with LD? This is important to know before I try to P2P only sync large folders that I do not want to go through LD 'cus of the size.

Could it be possible to add the option (that is currently greyed out) of not synching with LD in sync options, as you add a folder from a device? The folder should still end up as a ligh-blue shortcut on LD (like now after unsyncing from the LD folderoptions).
