Exclude a folder from distant access... RRS feed

  • Question

  • Hi ;)

I have a simple question but couldn't find my answer... I wouldlike to exclude a folder from shared folder. As an example, I have some pictures I don't want some people to see. I want someone to be able to see only some of my folder pics, but not all of them, how can I do it ? If I check the pictures folder for one person, he can see all of them.

Thanks a lot for your help.

  • You only have access control at the share level (or the user level, in the case of the personal folders under the Users share). Some people have tried setting access controls on folders within shares, but because of the way WHS handles file access this can cause other problems.

So unfortunately, you can't do what you want.

I'm not on the WHS team, I just post a lot. :)

  • Well thanks a lot for answering. It's a shame such a basic function is not present... I'll try looking to windows 2008 server fonctions but i'm not sure i'll be able to use it since i'm not that good with servers. Lol.

You could create a new share in the Console and put the pics you don't want the other people to see in there, then just don't give those users access to that share.

  • I already tried that. The problem is if I do that, when I open my shares on my network I have A LOT of folders and it's really complicated. I thought it was a basic function and I could have chosent some individual permissions.

  • As Ken mentioned, the best way is to control things at the share level.  Unfortunately this can clutter up your share directory with lots of folders.  In addition, only some of the default folders (Video, Music, etc...) allow media streaming-causing issues if you want to divide your media among user created shares.  (there is/was an add-in to enable streaming from user created shares but it doesn't appear to work anymore - and the person who created it no longer supports it).

You may want to spend some time searching for setting folder permissions keywords in these forums so you can gain some knowledge of the pitfalls (and solutions) of share permissions.  You can definitely set permissions but unexpected results may happen - necessitating fixes...
