  • Hello all,

Ok, here is your head scratcher for the week. Get your thinking caps on, cause this on is fun.  My client is a nanny from Germany living here in the states.  She brings me her laptop virused to the nth degree.  The laptop is from Germany, the keyboard layout is different and the OS is windows xp in German.  I de-virus the machine but windows sys files were corrupted.  I had her have the sys recovery disc mailed from Germany, and I re-set the system back to factory.   Thats when the real trouble began.  Not all of the drivers for the machine worked off the sys recovery disc.  HP was willing to tell me where the drivers were for free, but nothing else as the 1 year service warenty is up. I thought all was working and sent it home to the client.  Three weeks later I have the laptop back.  The sound drivers didn't work and the German version of the get genuine star was in the corner. There is no CD registration key on the recovery disc or its packaging.  It was factory sealed untill I broke the cellephane.  HP won't talk to me about it unless I pay the $25 an hour.  Please help me help this poor woman ad fix her windows.  I am not sure what else you will need to read to help, please post or PM me with info requests.

Windows XP does not have the ability to block you from access to the computer. Only Vista does and only up to Service Pack 1.

If your issue is with Windows Vista, please know that you have posted in the Windows XP WGA Forum, which is why the people that tried to answer your question gave you XP specific information.

If your issue is with Vista, please post in the Vista forum for proper assistance http://social.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/genuinevista/threads.

    Thank you,

  • Hello Lt.JustinB,

Please refer to the link below and run the MGA Diagnostics tool:

    http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?linkid=52012

You will be prompted to either “Run” or “Save” the tool. Choose to “Run” the tool and follow the on-screen prompts. You will receive an “Internet Explorer-Security Warning” dialog box for the “Windows Genuine Advantage Diagnostic Tool”; you must choose to “Run” this tool when prompted.

Once you are presented with the Diagnostics tool choose “Continue” to run the diagnostic report. If the “RESOLVE” button is available after running the diagnostics, please click “RESOLVE” to allow the diagnostic tool to attempt a repair.

    1.      After running the MGA Diagnostic tool, click on the “Windows” tab and then click on “Copy”.

    2.      Please return to this post and “Paste” the results here for additional review.

Next look on the computer itself, in the documentation you received with the computer or with your retail purchase of Windows to see if you have a Certificate of Authenticity (COA).  If you have one, tell us about the COA.  Tell us:

    1.  What edition of Windows XP is it for, Home, Pro, or Media Center, or another version of Windows?

    2.  Does it read "OEM Software" or "OEM Product" in black lettering?

    3.  Or, does it have the computer manufacturer's name in black lettering?

    4.  DO NOT post the Product Key.

Not sure what to look for?  See this page for reference:  http://www.microsoft.com/resources/howtotell/en/coa.mspx
