MSN not crawling my site RRS feed

  • Question

  •

    Hi,

I have added a sitemap, authenticated and all about 1 month ago. My site has several relevant inbound links but still MSN shows that it hasnt even crawled my site. Is there a reason for this?

  • Hello,

Your sitemap is compliant (well formed and validates) so that is not the issue.

Your robots.txt file should have a sitemap reference placed into it!

You need to ensure that your server redirects your domain to your WWW via HTTP301 server redirect.

I assume you are using a file to hold your Webmaster ID string as it is not referenced in the code. If you are not using a webmaster account to submit your site, you should establih one and submit through the tools rather than via a ping submission.

Microsoft isnt fast at reacting and you have a low PR, that makes the wait even longer. Additionally you have no know external links linking to your site. So it seems you need to concetrate on building some strength up.

So, in summary: Correct your robots.txt file, Redirect your domain to your WWW, Get a wemasters account, submit your sitemap via the webmaster tools and start working on external links into your site. Plus, be patient with Microsoft.

  • Hi DC,

Sure, your robots.txt file should have a reference to the sitemap.  Check out http://sitemaps.org/protocol.php#submit_robots

Your server is as well responding with HTTP200 server response for both WWW and non WWW submission... the standard is to redirect your domain to www via a HTTP301 server redirect. There are several reasons for doing this, among them is that you dont split your traffic , ranking and you wont have duplicate content issues. To test how your server is responding use this link  http://www.seoconsultants.com/tools/headers.asp

Your sitemap file seems to be well formed and valid... though I would question the entry where you refer to a directory using a period. Either remove that entry or declare it fully.

I can see that you as well are weak on external links that are known to connect to your site, You should work on that.

You actually have a PR of 1 for both WWW and non WWW so that is something. Correct the above and be patient with Microsoft, It takes time, sometimes even a month if your not Ferrari or Gucci or somebody big.

    Good luck.

    Hi DC,

Thanks for the offer to help, but its not ncessesary, I as well work in the field.

Your 301 of the non www is operating fine... however, your server is responding incorrectly to resources not found... you should redirect everything via 301 to the www unless you are porting known resources from the non www to the www. Instead, for resources that do not exist, return a http 404 error.

Correct the entry <loc>http://www.ing-kubon.de/./</loc> to point at the root of your domain using satndard syntax. ie

    http://www.ing-kubon.de/

Make sure that your site is SEO frinedly in all ways and provide the users with great content, and work on your external links to the site... and in time, you will start performing.

    Good Luck,

    CyberPerfect

  • Hi DC

    Correction to above:

You should NOT redirect "everything", including resources not found.

Case1: If the resource exists in the non www context - redirect to that resource to www

Case2: If the resource does NOT exist in the non www context... redirect to that resource to www and return HTTP404 errror for the resource that does not exist

Correct the entry <loc>http://www.ing-kubon.de/./</loc> to point at the root of your domain using standard syntax.

    ie.;  http://www.ing-kubon.de/

Make sure that your site is SEO friendly (in every respect) and provide the users with great content! Work on growing your external links into the site, ensure that your targeted pages are relevant and semantically associated to your external links (boosting PageRank)... and in time, you will start performing.

Wow, a small oversight like missing the NOT can make a huge difference.  Sorry for the confusion.

  • Hello Jafferson,

I think that maybe this thread has begun to resemble a support desk for MSN search

It really wasnt my intention. MSN live search is still a baby, they have a long road ahead of them and they will need to differentiate themselves from Google. They will be constantly modifying their algorythms to satisfy the criteria needed to be different. One of those differences could be less index, but better representation. Nobody but the engineers knows for sure, but I think at this point, its a safe bet. Therefore, dont be alarmed that Google vs. Live search is drastically different. What you should concentrate on is if the "RIGHT" links are being represented. The links that are important to your searchers and important to you.

A rule of thumb: Make sure that the page you want to get listed in search engine result pages (SERPS) has good content and that it is relevant to the search query. You mentioned that you have 200,000 pages... but its not possible to have that many pages with abundant text (content) that is on target. even the 900 links in Live search seems unlikely to have extremely relevant information that is unique to all the other 900 pages.

The art of SEO has become an understanding, an understanding that you need to balance a good foundation with great content and superb technology that doesnt stand in the way. It is an art, and because your site is a e-commerce site, your challenges are even greater.  I would suggest that you try to find a consultant, that is knowledgeable with organic search principles to help you raise the level of your site so that it becomes attractive to the search engines.

That is the key for everyone, to attract the search engines, and for that you will need help.
