Vista validation RRS feed

  • Question

  • My vista home premium (OEM) worked without problems for 3 months until this morning, when the license was suddenly 'invalid'.

The OEM sticker (Novatech) confirms that this is a Home Premium license but I can't get in.

  • Use RFM mode with firefox and type this into the URL:
    C:\Windows\system32\

    Locate the file taskmgr.exe
When prompted, download the file...it should take 0 time to do this.  When it's finished click open and the Task Manager will show.

From there click File > New Task
Type in "slui.exe 4" and push enter.  This should allow you to activate via telephone.

  • Mike, the product key looks perfectly fine on our backend servers. It looks like the product key was originally activated back in May just fine.

Have you changed any hardware at all lately or updated some hardware drivers (for anything)?

I would suggest reactivating. You can do this by internet or telephone by clicking the start/windows button and typing in "slui.exe 4" and pressing Enter.

  • Phil,

    Thanks for this.

Can you please post or e-mail the telephone activation number for the UK?

Vista will not let me log in, as it has deemed the build 'not genuine'.  It will only take me to the WGA site.  I cannot validate by internet, or obtain the nubmber, as the WGA tool will not load in my browser (Firefox), indeed crashes it, so I cannot start the process.

    Mike:

Simply having the telephone activation number won't really help. You need to load the dialogue box to Activate (not to be confused with Validation).

When you first boot up and log-in, you can choose to "Learn more online" or "Activate Windows Now". CHoose "Activate Windows Now".

  • I cannot login.

    What's the error-message upon-booting up? And login?

Can you record (and let me know) any error numbers that you see in the dialogue boxes? (they should appear similar to 0xc004c003, etc).

    Thanks!

  • Sorry about all of this.

I don't get an error message.  When logging in I am prompted to reactivate the product with the code above.  It does not accept this as a valid Home Premium product code and either shuts down or goes back to the login page.

Firefox can be activated to go to the WGA page, but unfortunately this does not load, due to ActiveX controls (I have One Care installed).

    Mike:

If you wish to access your PC in reduced functionality mode, what you can do (in firefox) is to type in the address bar "c:\" to access your C drive.

However, when you type in the Product Key (the 25-character key that came with your Vista/PC purchase) for Activation, what does it say? Can you clarify the statement "does not accept this as a valid home premium product code"?

  • 'The product key you have entered will not work with this edition of Windows Vista (TM).

You must enter Windows Vista Setup or enter a Windows Home Premium Product Key

    Mike:

Are you sure you're typing in the correct product key? What are the LAST 5 DIGITS (only!)?

Do they match to this: Windows Product Key: *****-*****-9T8WP-4WC26-X2849 ?

(please do NOT display all 25 characters by the way!!!)

  • Phil,

I believe I am typing in the correct key.  If I accidentally or deliberately type in a wrong letter or number, the software says it is an 'invalid' key.   The error message above suggests that the software believes that the key is for a different version of Vista.  I am certainly typing in the last 15 characters as above.  The other 10 it is less easy to check.  I have also checked with other people that the digits are what is on the sticker.

  • Thanks for the help.

Eventually I got into Vista in Safe Mode and found that there was quite alot of things in trouble (Internet Explorer, OneCare, and others).  Once some updates, that had tried to install prior to the breakdown (16th August), installed things improved.

Windows Update is showing that some Updates tried but failed to update on Thursday, and successfully did so Saturday.
