Not getting email alerts RRS feed

  • Question

  • Up until recently (before the point system change), I was getting email alerts as expected.

Now, when I say 'Alert Me', it says that I have yet to respond to the confirmation email that it sent me.

If I go into My Settings, and choose 'Resend' confirmation message, it seems to succeed, but I do not receive the email.

My email address is working fine otherwise, so it's not the Hotmail.

PLEASE HELP, because it's difficult to keep track of all my threads without the email alerts!

    TIA

    Grant Ward

  • I had a brain-wave.  Even though my Hotmail address is my primary private email address, I set the alert to go to my work's Exchange address, and hey-presto!  Immediately, I received the confirmation email, and all is well (sort-of).

I am receiving other messages to my Hotmail account all the time, so I don't understand why messages from forums@microsoft.com should be blocked by Hotmail?

Anyway, as long as I have some way of receiving alerts, I'm happy.

    Strange, but true.

  • It'd be great to keep the issues separate, this thread has both 1. Problem with confirmation emails (see http://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/reportabug/thread/3ae7ce1e-d033-43fb-8876-dd5ec58ebdec) and 2. activities/points not updating (working on that currently).

Re: #1 please be sure you don't have some junk mail filter or something, alerts will not work unless/until the confirmation link is clicked in that email.

I think you're missing the point.  Alerts were working perfectly and then they just stopped.  Junk email filters and confirmation links have nothing to do with this issue.

  • I don't think I'm missing the point. I'm not sure why the above user would be suddenly re-asked for confirmation, that is 2ndary to the alerts not being sent, which we are working on. So I still see this as two separate things I need to work out. We bounced the alerts service and disabled something that may be colliding with it on the back end, we'll see how that goes. Still no idea why a user would be asked to respond to a confirmation email when alerts used to be working, that is odd.

    Thanks for the reply.

  • OK, the service seems working again. Now onto your issue...  when you go to my settings does it tell you that you need to set an email, that you are awaiting confirmation? Can you screen capture it to skydrive so I can see what that page looks like?

  • When I go into My Settings, I see this:

    Configure Alerts

You cannot receive email alerts until you verify the confirmation email recently sent to 'wargrant1@hotmail.com'. (Resend) (Cancel)

When I choose "Resend", I get this:

    Configure Alerts
You have successfully cancelled the pending request.
We just sent a confirmation message to wargrant1@hotmail.com. If you don't see the message in your inbox, check your mail again in a few minutes or check your junk email folder.
However, I never receive the email in my inbox or junk mail.  I have tried this several times since I first started experiencing this problem, and the result has been the same every time.

You probably need to wait for more than a couple of seconds for the confirmation email to arrive.  Last time I did this it took nearly an hour!

  • Hi Jeff,

Yes, I've waited days!  I've tried it again now, and I'll wait for a while, but I don't think it's fixed for me.

This is such a hassle, because I keep having to go to My Threads, and sort on most recent post, in order to keep up with everything.  I watch and participate in 8 different forums.

  • Hi Brent,

I have another Hotmail address and it doesn't work to that either.  I haven't tried it with my GMail one, but I'll bet it works.  There is something weird between Technet Forums and Hotmail, methinks.
