This copy of Windows is illegal

Question
-
I purchased Windows 7 Home Premium OEM from Newegg last year in order to build my own PC.
It includes Service Pack 1 and is the 64-bit software version.
I installed it on an Intel 510 SSD as my C: drive and it has been running fine for the last year.
I recently purchased a Samsung 840 SSD to upgrade from the Intel 510 SSD.
After restoring a backup of C: from the Intel 510 SSD to the Samsung 840 SSD and booting the Samsung 840 SSD
Windows 7 gives me the message 'Preparing Your Desktop' and after a period of time provides a screen that has in its lower right:
Windows 7
Build 7601
This copy of Windows is illegal
At this point the only viable option is to shutdown or reboot as my desktop does not appear.
Am I trying to do something wrong? If not, how do I fix this problem?
Other:
I use EasyBCD 2.2 to as a boot manager to boot between Windows 7 and Windows 8 Pro (also purchased).
I use Storagecraft Shadowprotect Desktop as my backup and restore tool.

Lat me ask some questions, at this point just to confirm I understand ....
You said that the SSD was a restored image of the Samsung?
What imaging tool did you use? is it fully SSD aware? - SSDs have a very different topolgy to HDs.
Did you partition/format the SSD?
With the problems you're having actually booting the system, I am pretty much certain that the WGA problem is a minor one, and an effect, rather than a cause - certainly failing WGA would not cause the problems you are seeing in any version of Windows.

you should read the sticky at the top of the forum labeled please read before posting.
To properly analyze and solve problems with Activation and Validation, we need to see a full copy of the diagnostic report produced by the MGADiag tool (download and save to desktop - http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?linkid=52012 )
Once downloaded, run the tool.
Click on the Continue button, after a short time, the Continue button will change to a Copy button.
Click on the Copy button in the tool (ignore any error messages at this point), and then paste (using either r-click/Paste, or Ctrl+V ) into your post. (please do not edit the report.)

I see no issues in your report other than your install is not validated. Was the notice showing when you ran the report?
what happens if you validate your install?
Wednesday, November 21, 2012 2:10 PMAnswerer -
The notice was not showing when I ran the report. I could do nothing after booting into the Windows 7 on the Samsung 840 SSD. As I mentioned above the only viable option there was to shutdown or reboot as my desktop did not appear once the illegeal copy of Windows message appeared. I rebooted to Windows 7 on the Intel 510 SSD without incident and that is where I am posting to this thread, ran MGADiag.exe and the validation tool as requested.
When I ran the validate tool I arrive at the screen that says:
Welcome to Windows!
Because Windows installed on your PC is genuine, enjoy the security, reliability and protection it provides.Wednesday, November 21, 2012 2:35 PM -
looks to me like the not genuine notice is because of other issues. a not genuine windows functions pretty much normally. if you can't get into your desktop it is not because of a not genuine issue. you should be able to right click on the black desktop and get to your normal desktop.Wednesday, November 21, 2012 4:05 PMAnswerer

The screen with the error was blue in color not black if that helps. Right or left ckicking on the screen with the error message on the extreame lower right
"Windows 7
Build 7601
This copy of Windows is illegal"
did not do anything. I tried all the normal keys and function keys to no avail. I did do an Alt-Ctrl-Delete which brought up the screen that has the following choices in the middle of the screen:
Lock this Computer
Switch User
Logoff
Change Password
Start Task Manager
Also there was the Ease of Access button on the lower left of the screen. The Shutdown/Restart buttons were also present on the lower right of the screen which I finally used to reboot the system.
There was no way to get to my desktop from either screen.

If you can access the Task Manager, you can use that to launch Explorer.exe which will start your desktop - at least in theory!

Also, I am not getting a not genuine notice. I received the
"Windows 7
Build 7601
This copy of Windows is illegal" when booting into Windows 7 on the Samsung 840 SSD which is a restored image of the Windows 7 on the Intel 510 SSD that I am now running on.
I ran the MGADiag tool on this Intel 510 SSD Windows 7 that I posted above.
I ran the http://www.microsoft.com/genuine/validate/ also on this Intel 510 SSD Windows 7 that resulted in
Welcome to Windows!
Because Windows installed on your PC is genuine, enjoy the security, reliability and protection it provides. On my browser screeen.
Hope this helps!

We need to see the report from the failing configuration to have any chance of diagnosis.

I just booted the failling configuration on the Samsung 840 SSD. After getting the "This copy of Windows is illegal" on the lower right of the screen I did an Alt-Ctrl-Delete which brought up the screen having the Task Manager as an option. I bought up the task manager, selected File, new task, and entered Explorer.exe. This brought up a very limited desktop. This time in the lower right of the screen it now said "This copy of windows is not genuine".
The desktop would not allow acess to anything useful such as computer, control panel, IE9, or the run command. I tried many, many things but was blocked.
I do not know how to obtain any useful information as nothing appears to work. Any idea on how I can obtain information from the failing configuration?
I can access from this Windows 7 system (Intel 510 SSD) the failing Windows 7 system on the Samsung 840 SSD.
Will the Windows 7 Backup and Restore system tool work or will that give me other problems. I am thinking in particula of the same disk signiture on the Samsung 840 SSD as the Intel 510 for instance or other problems I am not aware of. I do not want to clobber this operating system in the process.
Thanks for the help!

The image that was restored was from an Intel 510 SSD. The image was restored to a Samsung 840 SSD which is failing. Both are 120 GB SSD's.
I used StorageCraft's ShadowProtect Desktop edition Version 4.2.7 (latest) to dump and restore the image, this tool is SSD aware and it is the best (and most expensive) tool for Windows system backup and recovery.
I created and formatted (Full not Quick) a partition on the Samsung 840 SSD that is just a bit bigger than it had to be. I followed the rules for optimal SSD use by starting setting the partition "Policy" to "Sectors" and starting the partition at offset 2048 from disk start. This is exactly the same setup I used on the Intel 510 SSD that I have been running on since the summer of 2011.
I will repost the problem as you suggest.
I will leave this open as some one may have a great idea and respond here.
Thanks for the help!

Might be a bit late, but the most common reason I've found when restoring a ShadowProtect image, especially to a new drive, is the wrong drive letter is assigned to the Windows partition from the ShadowProtect PE environment.
The fix is simply, before you reboot after you've restored your image, go to Tools>Boot Configuration Utility>Uncheck 'Hide Advanced Options'>Additional Boot Tools>Drive Letter
If your boot drive says anything but C in the Windows column, it will cause the 'Windows is illegal' issue, just change it to C and reboot
