Syncing Zune folder, Rediculous RRS feed

  • Question

  • So i have my up to date music collection in my zune folder. Everything is how it should be. So i deleted my zune folder on my laptop, and did a P2P sync from the desktop to laptop, woke up in the morning and the sync was complete over the network, great. I set the zune software on my laptop to never update the mp3 tags on my files on there, so basically my desktop would be my master, and sync should always be 1 way from desktop to laptop, unless i add new mp3's to the laptop. But when i open the zune on my laptop, even though now the libraries are identicle, and im just playing music, and downloading podcasts (with the same sunscriptions on both which i believe should sync fine) its syncing like 3-12 gb of music everytime i open zune up on my laptop or destop. (aslong as its one after the other, not open close zune twice in a row on either machine) Whats going on? my library shouldn't be changing, this is obnoxious. Should i sync the Zune program files too so the data there matches up? seems like that could cause some issues. What should i do? thanks guys.

  • Hi,

It sounds like the Zune software is modifying the files - regardless of the fact that you've told it not to. A good way to check is to copy an mp3 from the folder to a temporary directory, open Zune and then compare the two mp3s. If there is even the slightest change between the files (possibly after the file is played) then that is what is causing the sync. To compare the files you can use a program such as windiff for binary comparison, or use an md5 hasher which will generate a unique hash per file (if the hashes are different then the file has been changed).

If the two  files are still identical, and Live Mesh starts syncing them regardless, then it looks like you've hit on a bug in Live Mesh - which you should submit on Connect (instructions).

  • With respect to the syncing 3-12GB every time you open Zune, perhaps what's happening is that when you open up Zune, it's trying to update your tags and album artwork, or change the "last played" metadata in the file.  The changed tags cause the entire file to show up as different from one machine to another, so Live Mesh jumps in and tries to update the files on the other machine.

As a general Zune recommendation as well as your specific problem, I would disable the "update track information and album art" option in the Zune software on both machines, and fix any tag problems you have in a 3rd party editor such as mp3tag (it's free, and faster than using Zune anyway).  Both the automatic tag update feature and manually fixing tags in the software are notoriously buggy, and once I started using mp3tag it solved all my library problems.

    Hope this helps.

  • If you have a Zune subscription, the DRM on the downloaded files is being updated every time you connect the Zune and the software logs into the Marketplace. It needs to refresh the DRM data. I also believe that there may be other metadata that is updated as mentioned by Oren.

  • I don't believe in DRM, all of my music is MP3, haha. Yeah, i wish there was an option for zune not to modify files. I will try some of these suggestions tonight.
