Installing from USB Disk RRS feed

  • Question

  • Hello Everyone, I have ordered myself the components for building a WHS box but I 'forgot' to buy a optical drive for installation. Now I have a problem. I dont want to buy an external dvd drive only for a one time setup and still (ofcourse) want to install WHs on this new machine. Now that wouldnt be such a problem if it wouldn't be the case that my notebook only has ata drives and my whs box will have sata drives so installing it on one pc and then moving the hd to the other box will not work either. Is it possible, somehow, to install WHS from the network?

  • No, network installation is not possible. You'll need a locally connected DVD-ROM drive. You may be able to get away with a USB drive, but for best results you should use a SATA or (preferable) PATA drive.
I'm not on the WHS team, I just post a lot. :)

  • You could try to borrow the optical drive from your normal PC for the purpose of installation.
If you want to attempt the installation from an USB flashdrive, you can follow the procedure outlined on WeGotServed.
