Computers and Backup Tab Missing from Console.

Question
-
Hi, A while ago I installed an add in "My Movies" to my WHS, I didn't really like it so I recently uninstalled it. Since then the Computers and Backups Tab is missing from the Console.
I have re installed the WHS software on my server but the Tab is still missing. I can backup my PCs OK but can not see the backups anywhere and so would not be able to select one to reinstall.
Any one have any ideas on how to get the tab back?Monday, December 29, 2008 9:43 AM

Hi Simon,
I am not a developer and not a member of the WHS team, so these logs are as cryptic for me as they are for you.
The line about the exception System.FormatException: Guid should contain 32 digits with 4 dashes (xxxxxxxx-xxxx-xxxx-xxxx-xxxxxxxxxxxx) looks for me, as if either a disk or a volume has lost or corrupted its GUID (the identifier which is used to associate the disks to the storage pool) or the related key in the registry is not properly formatted any more or something like that.
So this could be a situation, which can only be solved by a complete new installation.
Now it depends from your detailed configuration and the possibilities to buffer data stored in shared folders, how your further steps have to be to avoid data loss. (i.e. new disk, using old system disk with disconnected data drives, is it necessary to copy files from D:\DE\shares on the server to some other place etc.).

Hi,
how you have "reinstalled" the WHS software on your server? Using the DVD and performing a Server Reinstall, or with some other method (or do you mean you reinstalled the Connector software on the client)?
If you login to the server locally, can you check the Event log in Control Panel/Administrative Tools for related error messages?
Sometimes it may help to rollback the WHS components to the status before the last update by uninstalling the latest Windows Home Server update temporary (via Control Panel/Add or Remove Programs on the server), which would be KB957825 - only visible with Show Updates toggled). If this solves the console access problem, you can run Windows Update via WHS console again to reapply the upgrade.

Hi Olaf, thanks for the fast response.
I did a server reinstall using the DVD. the only event which I don't recognise is...
Dependent Assembly Microsoft.VC80.CRT could not be found and Last Error was The referenced assembly is not installed on your system.
Not sure if this has anything to do with it..
The tab was missing straight from the reinstall before KB957825 was installed and is still missing after it.

Hi Simon,
I don't know why this happend to you (especially after installing from the scratch), but the messages points out, that a library is missing.
Here is described, how you can fix it (although this is unsupported on WHS, it will hopefully help you to solve the immediate issue).

Olaf, looking at the link you provided it is obvious that the event was not connected to the missing tab.
Thanks for the info.

Hi Simon,
hm, why not? Maybe the WHS console is programmed in Visual C, so it could be, that elements cannot be loaded, if this library is missing or not properly registered.
Without more information hard to say, if or if not this is the cause.
Could you also try to open the WHS console directly on the desktop, and just after that click Start/Run,type %qlogs% and click OK? This should bring you to the folder with WHS specific logs. Sort those by date and check the latest lines, if you see something related to the missing tab in the most current log files.

Thanks Olaf, I was trying to avoid a complete rebuild, but I suspect you are right and that is the only way I will resolve it.
I have a 1TB USB drive which I can copy all my data to, so when I actually buy the product (on a 120 day trial att) which I will soon, I will do the full rebuild from scratch
Many thanks for your help today..
