De Frag RRS feed

  • Question

  • Hello to all,

I was wondering, How can you De frag the HD in a HP Home server. I've made a lot of changes and done a lot of work in the past week  and i know it's a NTFS file system, and this keeps itself clean and in the correct order, but i would like to run a basic De frag.

So far this is been a great little machine. 1.5 Tb for the whole family to store there stuff.

    Thanks

    Jeff

  • Hi Jeff,

there are defagmentation tools designed for WHS available on the market. But my opinion to such tools and defragmentation on the server is, that they are more a placebo than bring really benefits. Not only, that for a home server the bottleneck is the network and not the disk, performing the defragmentation will use system resources on it's own and during the action slow down the system. In single cases also other issues with defragmentation tools have been reported, which ended in reinstalling the server.

    Best greetings from Germany
