validation errors

Question
-
One moment its fine then after logging off and on, it pops up not genuine but then the diagnostic shows it is genuine,MSE then turns green again. This keeps repeating everytime we log off and log back on with xp.I also get this message when I go to check..even though I am in fact running firefox, which is up to date.
You are not running Internet Explorer or Mozilla Firefox or Netscape Browser

Please attempt validation at www.microsoft.com/genuine/validate - what exactly happens?

"Welcome to Windows!
Because Windows installed on your PC is genuine, enjoy the security, reliability and protection it provides."
goes to that page with that header..asks me if Id like MSE and some ads for windows 7.I already have MSE though so I dont understand.Ive uninstalled reinstalled it several times, seems to be not recognizing it.All seemed to happen after a windows update from their site.I used to just skip logon page at startup too but now that too is changed, have to log on each time.- Edited by georgedman Thursday, November 22, 2012 4:03 PM

You will always be offered MSE by that page - and either IE8 or something else.
Please check your background settings - right-click on the desktop, and select Properties
in the popup, select Desktop
Click on Customize Desktop
Click on 'Web'
UNcheck (if checked) any entries in teh box, and click OK out.
Log out and back in and see if that fixes it.

did not work,it is still doing it.for some reason its not recognizing MSE until I validate to show each time, then it allows it.however, when I log off and back on, its back to the same issue.
As far as the web customise tab..nothing was checked, said ok,restarted.same as before.- Edited by georgedman Friday, November 23, 2012 3:03 AM

What Anti-Virus and other security software are you using currently?
What other Anti-Virus programs have EVER been used on this machine since the last reformat/reinstall?Noel Paton | Nil Carborundum Illegitemi | CrashFixPC | The Three-toed Sloth

Microsoft security essentials and the free malwarebytes...nothing else.Friday, November 23, 2012 11:03 AM

...and you've never had any other AV installed?
Please open a COmmand Prompt window, run the following command and post the results
REG QUERY HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run

! REG.EXE VERSION 3.0
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\windows\current version\run
ctfmon.exe REG_SZ C;WINDOWS\system32\ctfmon.exe
swg REG_SZ "C:\Program files\Google\Googletoolbarnotifier\Googletoolbarnotifier"
c:\Documents and Settings\Owner>
Then it said 'swg' is not recognized as an internal or external command operable program or batch file.
'flier.exe'" is not recognized as an internal or external command, operable program or batch file
hope this helps.I might add that I had bad bad fake antivirus infection about a year ago and malwarebytes caught it but microsoft online support went in and fixed it with their tool that allows them to remotely go into my computer. This whole issue started bout time change, started with failed updates(which had to be manually installed) then recently went to failed authentication. That pretty much sums it up.It did the failed authentication for MSE today but ran the verifier and it showed it is in fact genuine and now its green(MSE logo) again. When I log off/on,,it goes to orange and says it will expire if not resolved in x number of days.

Please download SilentRunners.vbs from www.silentrunners.org
run it, and when complete, zip the log file it creates, and upload it to your public SkyDrive (www.skydrive.live.com ) or other favoured fileshare site, and post a link to your response.

its a huge file..bear with me..not computer litterate.how to zip it and where to put it?I can copy paste?Saturday, November 24, 2012 12:34 AM
-
right-click on the file
select 'Send to..'
select'Compressed (zipped) folder'
another file will appear in the same place with the folder iconwith a zip on it -
in internet Explorer go to http://skydrive.live.com and read all about Skydrive there - upload the zipped file to your Public folder (because then everyone can see it) and then post a link to it (copy it from the address bar) in your reply.

very close - but no cigar. :)
I can't see any file in there, so you've either not put it in the Public folder, or you've not shared the file with Everyone (right-click on it and select Share)

Thx for trying to help me.will try again later.
update; tried again; double clicked the icon in my doc folder..what I got was a 3 second thing that ended up a text document.I went back to the site and followed the procedures in faq, tried running in command prompt..it would not run.error messages kept telling me it was nots specified path or something to that effect.
Is there some other option?I dont have the xp installation cd..mia.I considered reinstalling the whole system.Dont know what to do.I even went and ran uninstallers for several antivirus programs in case one of those got added w/o my knowledge(windows search function is also not working)I manually ran malware bytes..it found a bug..a .game thing but removed it.

There you are, just ran it again after downloading the tool.Windows search function is still not working. Not sure if some kinda virus got it or if the last bad fake av wasnt totally removed. My wife was using it at a job search site and told me it just downloaded by itself, thats when I called microsoft support and paid them to remote access my computer and get it running again.System restore is also not working even though it says in the config file it is running.Hope this info helps.thanks.- Edited by georgedman Monday, November 26, 2012 12:29 AM
