WHS 2011 NAS not seen in network ?

Question
-
When I open windows explorer via RDP in WHS 2011 I see everything in the network except the NAS.
It shows up in the list of "Other devices". I can log into the admin of the NAS just fine via RDP/WHS. I just can't access any folders on it.
NAS is a raid 10 LaCie/Intel ss4000-e (shouldn't matter what it is though)
All of the other computers on the network can see the NAS and access it just fine. I want to move some files off of it into an archive folder I created in WHS 2011 but if I can't see any folders this is difficult to accomplish

Once the NAS finished the last large folder xfer to the WHS 2011 archive folder I renamed the workgroup that the NAS identified itself as belonging to back to the default "workgroup"name. After a restart of everyone on the network (renamed all computers to workgroup) the NAS shows up in windows explorer in WHS 2011.
My local network has been set up for a very long time and used a non standard name ?????-network instead of the default "workgroup" name.
This NAS, like many on the market, uses a rom based Linux OS so apparantly does not "play" like a windows OS does when it comes to workgroups.
So it was a combination of "pilot error" and "wardrobe malfunction"
I would still be interested in hearing why WHS 2011 insists on locking the name of the workgroup....

Certificate Services. Once Active Directory Certificate Services is
installed you cannot change computer name, workgroup name, or domain name
(if the computer is domain joined) without first removing AD CS. Definitely
not something you want to do on a WHS 2011 computer unless you are very,
very familiar with AD CS.

Why not just use a Client machine which sees both WHS shared folders as well as your NAS to copy between the two?Tuesday, June 7, 2011 4:11 PM

This is what I have been doing but I wanted to resolve this.
I believe I have isolated the problem down to the workgroup name. I do not find a way to change the name of the workgroup in WHS 2011 it seems to be locked to "workgroup" as the name of the workgroup. When I go to control panel > system > and click change settings the "change workgroup" button is disabled.
Can someone verify that WHS 2011 must be assigned the to the "workgroup" workgroup?
If I can't change the name of the workgroup on WHS 2011 I will have to change it on all of the other computers in the network (including the NAS).

Hmm, I thought "... this is difficult to accomplish.." meant you were unable to do it! There is something else wrong with your system/network as my WHS2011 has workgroup set to "Workgroup" and all my other clients are on a different workgroup name and I do not have any problems. Perhaps your NAS is the problem?Tuesday, June 7, 2011 5:52 PM
