windos update error 80070496 - net start action starts service but still problems RRS feed

  • Question

  • Since a couple of weeks I have this problem - I have removed sw installed after 14 may - but can still not obtain updates. I am running family safety / security essentials - firewall on - never had this problem !  The only "funny" thing I notice is that Isince a couple of weeks media player sharing not functioning (DEP)  - but I do not use / need this .... I have cleaned up disk .... do not know what to do (re-installing isnot really an option). Any ideas ?Proble seems to be related to software licensing service gives error when I try to start this serice : 80070005

Ah - so that's why you posted in the Genuine Vista forum, rather than
    Windows Updates?
You may still be better off posting this question there.
Are you sure that the error number is 80070005? - that's an 'access denied'
    error.
How did you attempt to start the service? - through the command-line, or via
    Services.msc??
You need to use a Command Prompt with Elevated permissions to do it from
there, it's a lot easier to use the Services options - where you should set
    the Service to Automatic.

  • Hello SpotMyDpots,

Are you receiving Non-Genuine messaging?  If not, then Noel is correct and the best place to post this issue would be in the Windows Update forum at http://social.answers.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/vistawu/threads

If you are receiving Non-Genuine Messaging, please download and run the Genuine Diagnostics tool (MGADiag.exe) at this link http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?linkid=52012. Click "Continue", click the "Copy" button then “Paste” the report into a reply message in this thread.

If you do not have access to the Start Button:
    1) Login to Vista and click the option that brings up Internet Explorer.
    2) Type: http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?linkid=52012 into the browser address bar.
    3) A window will come up asking if you want to “Run” or “Save”, Select “Run”
    4) When the program runs, click the “Continue” button, then click the “Copy” button.
    5) Return to this thread http://social.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/genuinevista/thread/170b8e42-698c-41fa-b80f-5f0e95e8c9fa.
    6) In a reply post, paste the Diagnostic Report.

    Thank you,
