Noel Paton | Nil Carborundum Illegitemi | CrashFixPC | The Three-toed SlothSomething did just hit me over the head! Please try this, if the problem is still present...This may simply be caused by a bad set of Intel Rapid Storage Technology drivers -Installing the Intel Rapid Storage Driverstry downloading and installing them from here - http://downloadcenter.intel.com/Detail_Desc.aspx?ProductID=2101&DwnldID=20624Once complete, please reboot twice, then post another MGADiag report.

***MGA Diagnostic Report Required***
To properly analyze and solve problems with Activation and Validation, we need to see a full copy of the diagnostic report produced by the MGADiag tool (download and save to desktop -http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?linkid=52012 )
Once downloaded, run the tool.Click on the Continue button, after a short time, the Continue button will change to a Copy button.Click on the Copy button in the tool (ignore any error messages at this point), and then paste (using either r-click/Paste, or Ctrl+V ) into your post.Carey Frisch

For what version and edition it the computer licensed, according to the COA sticker??
please try the following.....
Recreate the Licensing Store with the correct data.
1) Open an Internet Browser window.
2) Type: %windir%\system32 into the browser address bar.
3) Find the file CMD.exe
4) Right-Click on CMD.exe and select 'Run as Administrator'
5) Type: net stop slsvc (it may ask you if you are sure, select yes)
6) Type: cd %windir%\ServiceProfiles\NetworkService\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\SoftwareLicensing
7) Type: rename tokens.dat tokens.bar
8) Type: cd %windir%\system32
9) Type: net start slsvc
10) Type: cscript slmgr.vbs -rilc (It may take a long time for this to complete, please be patient)
11) Restart your computer twice. You may be asked to enter your COA Key and/or Activate. – if asked for the Key, use the one on your COA sticker on the machine’s case (you may need to activate by telephone).
Once complete, run another MGADiag report and post back with the results.

Noel- Windows Vista Home Premium OEM Act is what it states at the top of the COA stickerMonday, June 11, 2012 4:17 PM

Does the label state the product key is for Windows Vista Home Edition? Try again and make sure you are accurately entering in the characters. Sometimes a "B" looks like an "8" and a "O" is really a "Q".

Just received a new notification stating that an unauthorized change was made to windows and it must be reinstalled to activate... any other thoughts?
Plenty :)The problem is that the error message is totally uninformative on its own.Are you having any other problems with Windows at all?Have you had a malware infection recently?Have you changed/updated/added any software lately?

Okay- ran the 2nd one and everything was good.
As for other issues- my Microsoft Security Essentials states that my system may be unprotected due to Windows not being genuine.
Malware- Yes. I contacted Dell about the problem I was experiencing (Windows not being genuine) and they ran the SuperAntiSpyware program and found 3 threats. However I wasn't willing to pay their fee to solve the issue just yet- I was hoping to get some help on here first. So after they ran that through my computer I used the same program to remove the 3 threats.
Only changes/updates were the automatic Microsoft updates...there were several of them that hadn't loaded including SP2 and then 40 or so others that came through right after SP2. I did all of those after the notification of Windows not being genuine.

Ah - a possible clue :)So the problem appeared while you still had SP1 (hopefully) installed? What other Anti-Viruses have you EVER had installed on this machine? (including any AV pre-installed by the manufacturer but never activated)

Used to run McAfee a few years ago...also tried a free one through our internet provider (don't know name of it- came from Insight) but didn't like it...also tried AVG. I think those are all of the Anti-viruses we have used. Also used Malware Bytes to detect problems...I believe that is all...purchased this laptop about 7 years ago.
Yes, SP1 was installed when the problem occurred.

Also- there is a restore point available with the description of SP2 installation if that is helpful.Monday, June 11, 2012 5:55 PM

Yes, SP1 was installed when the problem occurred.
It could be a hangover from one of those AV's - so let's run the removal tools for them and hope :)Download each one and run it, then reboot and run the nextThe Insight one appears to be from CA (Computer Associates) - http://cainternetsecurity.net/KB/KD.aspx?KDId=1056I'd also run the Norton one to be on the safe side - https://www-secure.symantec.com/norton-support/jsp/help-solutions.jsp?lg=english&ct=united+states&docid=20080710133834EN&product=home&version=1&pvid=f-homeOnce you've done all that, you should run another MGADiag report, and post it.I may not be able to respond until tomorrow pm (UK time)

Hmmm - no change...Open Windows Explorer and navigate to the C:\Windows\System32 folder.find the Catroot2 folder there, and right-click on it - select Properties. In the General tab, clear the box beside 'Read-only (Only.....' by clicking in it until it's empty (it cycles around three values)Click Apply.Accept any warnings that come up - if you get a 'Ignore/Ignore All/Try again' option, pick 'Ignore all'Once complete (may be almost instantaneous), reboot, and run another MGADiag report.

Thanks both of you for your help- I truly appreciate the time you given to helping me solve this issue. I have sent the message to Microsoft Genuine Advantage Support.
As for the CD- I know it came with one...but I'm not sure where it is (we've moved and sometimes things are misplaced). Also, one of the "checks" you guys had me do was through a Microsoft website and the solution it gave was to purchase an update to Windows 7 (only $100 or so). Do you think that might solve the problem? If I did that- would I lose all my documents, programs, etc that are on my computer if I don't back them up? I'm really concerned about the other programs (esp Microsoft Office suite as I'm not sure where those disks are either). Sadly, I know just enough to be dangerous with a computer but not enough to solve my own problems- so I appreciate your feedback! Thanks.

You didn't run that from an Elevated COmmand Prompt - just a normal one.
Please do it again....
To open an Elevated Command Prompt Window (the CP window), click on Start, All Programs, Accessories – then right-click on Command Prompt, and select Run as Administrator. Accept the UAC prompt.

That still looks like a User mode rather than Elevated prompt.Does the window have the title 'Administrator: C:\Windows\System32\cmd.exe'?If so, then you have a bigger problem than I thought!

no- the title is Administrator: Command Prompt

Here...for some reason it didn't actually copy what I wanted it to...and instead just gave me the old one. Is this more helpful?

Hello Tiger06,
A few days have passed. Would you provide us an update on this issue. Is it still occurring and if so would you post another Diagnostic Report?
Thank you,

Sorry- that's probably my fault, for not coming back with something :(I have to admit that without something hitting me over the head, a reinstall is about the only way forward that I can see.(but I too would like to see a new report before heading into that territory.
