Live Mesh Remote Desktop - Screen Dimming Issue RRS feed

  • Question

  • I've been using Live Mesh for a couple days now, and it's been pretty cool so far.

I have a problem with the Remote Desktop feature though-- every time I remote into my PC from elsewhere, most of the screen on the PC gets dimmer (everything but the cursor, which remains at full brightness, so it's almost as though there's a screen-wide transparent black layer the app is placing and then forgetting to remove or something).

The problem is cumulative- today I remotely connected about 8 times, for a long time, and now after getting back, the display is almost unusably dim (dimmer than it is if I remote in only a few times).

It's a strange issue, and I can only seem to get it back to normal by restarting, which is quite frustrating when I have several important apps running (which is why I use the Remote Desktop feature in the first place).

The remote display of this PC's desktop (on the remote computer) is fine- the problem is just local.

Has anyone seen this before, and any idea how to fix it?

    Thanks.

  • Hi,

Thanks to Delmont and GuyWithDogs for helping out here.

<Edit> I'm afraid that I have to make an embarrassing retraction here.  There is a somewhat similar problem with Live Mesh Remote Desktop where the remote monitor will remain completely black, and the fix we have in the works is for that problem.  I'm terribly sorry about this mistake (even people working at Microsoft make them from time to time ;) ).  I'm still working on getting information about this issue from our developers.  We do have a number of fixes coming in the next update, and it's possible that they will resolve this issue, but in the meantime, any additional information would be useful, particularly if anyone else is seeing this issue.  amb9800: You especially have my apologies.  If you try any of the suggestions above from Delmont and GuyWithDogs, or if you can see whether this problem is reproducible with the computer hooked up to a different monitor, please feel free to send email with my name in the Subject line to lmprev@microsoft.com, and I'll continue to work with you on this.

  • Hello amb9800,

    That's wild.

What if you use the built in Windows Remote Desktop Connection to remote into this pc for an expirement. Does the screen dim with that too I wonder?  I'd try that and see and reply back. And/or do you use the MSN IM? If yes, allow a friend to remote in to the pc and see what the screen does.

On the pc you're remoting into, what version of Windows are you running? I'd make sure you have the newest/current video driver too. While you're at it, I'd hit the Windows Update page to get current on everything else too. But goto your video card's company web page for the newest video driver, don't use the Windows Update driver for your video card.

One more thing I thought of, can you Mesh Remote Desktop into other pc's and their screens dim or no?

Hope my 2 cents helps, reply back and let us know.

  • Delmont's got some good points - what OS, what video card, what version of drivers?

And - are you running any other remote connection software that has a driver or service running at the same time as Live Mesh? I had trouble with an instance of VNC related to something from work - it caused problems with my screen being totally black in the remote session.

You might want to use Device Manager and see what's listed under your Display Adapter in case there's something there you're not aware of.

  • Thanks for the info!

In case it's of any use, this machine has an ATI Radeon HD 4850 512 w/ latest Cats installed, on Vista Home Premium 32-bit.
