HPC 2008 Server to 2012 migration plan RRS feed

  • Question

  • I have two head nodes running Windows HPC Server 2008 SP1. Both these head nodes are also domain controllers.

I have an opportunity coming soon to upgrade to Windows Server 2012 with HPC Pack 2012. Correct me if I am wrong but I do not think there is a Windows HPC 2012 Server edition.

First, is it possible to upgrade from Windows HPC Server 2008 edition?

Second, what would be the best migration plan? I was thinking that you could drop one of the DCs out, upgrade this to 2012 and join it to the existing domain. Then you could upgrade the second DC. Finally, install HPC Pack 2012.

  • Update for anyone reading this thread.

I ended up avoiding the issue by building a new cluster based on Server 2012.

I was able to leave the 2008 DCs, just removing the old hpc pack,  and added a new server to act as a headnode.

I think the answer to upgrading HPC Server 2008 (with DC role) to Server 2012 is "not very easily". It's cleaner to do a re-install.
