Money 2004 password failure

Question
-
I am using Money 2004 (actually on disc) and Vista. My Money file was OK Friday evening but when I turned the computer on Saturday morning and tried to open Money file it came up incorrect password. I have never used the internet connection I tick 'Don't need to use online features' and the remember me box has always been ticked so I usually sign straight in. Anyone any ideas on how I can get to my data files.Sunday, April 21, 2013 11:04 AM

Have you tried to recover from your latest backup?Sunday, April 21, 2013 1:52 PM

Yes, it won't open that for same reason. The only things I can open are the archive data files from before 2004.Sunday, April 21, 2013 5:38 PM

Having read several forums I have tried installing Money 2004 on a friend's computer and taken copies of my data files with me. Every time I try to open my latest, backup or archive file it is asking for my Microsoft Passport password. I did years ago set up an account but then did not use it at all so it is now defunct. I do have a file for my late husband in Money 2004 and that will accept my ordinary password and open OK but nothing else set up since 2004 will without Passport.

I guess you already tried using your second-newest backup also.
You could try making a repaired version of your Money *.mny file. See http://support.microsoft.com/kb/902466
I presume you did not make scheduled backups to a USB drive or other removable media. You will in the future I expect.

I am unable to try repairing without being able to open the file first. It asks for my Microsoft Password when I try.
Yes I have a backup DVD and I removed the copy on my hard drive to USB and restored a copy from back up disk but it came up with same problem.
I am beginning to realise that I have now lost all that information luckily I have statements of all bank and credit card account so I think I will have to start up a new file from beginning of the year as far as I can.

There are two kinds of passwords. There is LiveID (Passport), has both an email address and a password as part of the credentials and which I presume you are talking about, and there is a conventional password. If it asks about your email addresss, you will have to use the email address that you used when you entered the password, even if you don't still have that email addresss. The email address is not case-sensitive. The password portion is case-sensitive.
I suggest you write down each email address you might have used. Then write down all of the email addresses you might have used. Think of permutations. Keep paper and pencil by your bed in case you think of something to try. Think of all of the places that you may have written down your credentials. Even the passwords for other applications may be useful, since many people will use similar passwords for different applications. If you remember part of the password, that could be helpful. For example, if you remembered that the password was Raven followed by a 4-digit number, there is a program that might try all of those combinations Raven0000 ... Raven9999 for you.
When you have your list, disconnect from the Internet. Start Money, and try to log in offline. Try all of the permutations you can think of. Write down what worked. We did have one poster succeed in remembering the credentials.
Do not attempt to change your LiveID. In any case, you will need to use the credentials that were in effect at the time that you saved that Money file.
