  • Question

  • I have had my laptop since the summer of 2004 and have had no problem with it or the windows programs that I have legally bought.  Now, since yesterday afternoon I have been getting a BLUE STAR appearing on my screen saying that I “may be a victim of software counterfeiting”. And it won’t allow me to use messenger, MSN Explorer etc! I have so much work to do, so many work colleagues I need to contact, and I cant access my work, or my contacts.

WHAT THE HELL IS GOING ON??

Every time I have restarted my laptop this stupid thing has come up.  I have wasted a full day with this nonsense.  Is this some sort of stealth method for Microsoft to bleed more money out of me?  I am sick to death of this garbage.

  • Hello J_G_P,

Both your Windows and Office are Genuine. The problem is with the Cryptographic service on your computer. The Cryptographic service is used by Windows Genuine Advantage to read the Digital Signatures of files on your computer. If the Cryptographics have errors (as seen in your Diagnostic Report "Validation Status: Cryptographic Errors Detected") WGA can not Validate your Genuine status.

There is a very easy fix for this. Go to http://www.microsoft.com/Genuine/diag/ and click the “Start Diagnostic" button. If the tool finds any issues, click the "Resolve Now" button. The tool will, most likely, resolve the issue on it's own or will provide you further instructions.

    Thank you,

  • J_G_P,

Please follow these steps for assistance:

Step 1 is to run the utility at this link http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?linkid=52012, then click the Windows tab, click the "Copy" button, then paste the report into a response in this thread.

Step 2 is to look on the computer or with the materials you received with the computer or with Windows to see if you have a Certificate of Authenticty (COA).  If you have one, tell us about the COA.  Tell us:

    1.  What edition of Windows XP is it for, Home, Pro, or Media Center, or another version of Windows?

    2.  Does it read "OEM Software" or "OEM Product" in black lettering?

    3.  Or, does it have the computer manufacturer's name in black lettering?

    4.  DO NOT post the Product Key.

Not sure what to look for?  See this page for reference:  http://www.microsoft.com/resources/howtotell/en/coa.mspx
