Dual Boot Windows 8 and Server 2008 R2 or Use Window 8 Pro "Only" RRS feed

    Okay, to begin with, thanks for any information.

    In a nutshell,

    1. New PC, i5, 32GB RAM, mainly for gaming.

    2. I would like to begin my study of Server 2008 R2.

    3. Main OS, Windows 8 (Regular) 64Bit, not loaded, PC is being Built, finish this weekend.

    4. Since I will be studying Server 2008.  I would prefer to use Server 2008 R2, for VMs to set up a private lab enviroment, I am debating about using Windows 8 Pro ($140), to run my VM in Hyper V Client. 

    5. I have been using a separate PC with 8GB and a Q6600 to run my VM in Server 2008 R2 for the last two years, to study Window 7, (fully Certified in Window 7, thanks to that setup), so I am debating about keep it, since this new PC has SOO much more ram. 

    Any opinions or suggestions would be appreciated.

    Your upcoming Gaming PC will probably perform better and can host more concurrent running VM's then the separate PC.

    Creating two partitions and dual booting with Win8 and Server 2008 R2 trail edition and run Hyper-V there is also an option.

    It will depend on the performance and the amount of concurrent VM's you will need to run what you should choose.

    Dynamic Memory available in Hyper-V 2012 and Win 8 can help to save memory and run more VM's.

    Since I am considering running a Windows 2008 R2 Study Lab Enviroment, I would be looking to run about 5 Servers and maybe 10 OSes, depending on the exercised, on my Windows 7 labs, I ran three Servers and 5 OSes.  1GB for the Servers and 512mb for the OSes, which left with 512mb or more for the Host, depending on how many VMs were active.  

    I had considered getting a Dell Server for about $300, but the RAM always raised the cost.

    Do you feel I would be "better" served with a Full OS of Windows 8 Pro for use of the Hyper V Client, or go with a dual boot system and run Server 2008 R2 Trial ??

    Hi,

    Windows 8 has the same Hyper-V functionalty as Server 2012 Hyper-V except for clustering and management through SCVMM. So for running  a home lab Windows 8 will do fine. But creating a dual boot with Server 2008 R2/2012 for Hyper-V trail will save you $140 for upgrading your Windows 8.

    Just as an update, I have decide to go back to Windows 7 on this new PC, turns out my Logitech 'gaming" keyboard is "not" Windows 8 compatiable, shortcuts do not work.   I will keep the forum posted, I expect to load Windows Server 2008 in about a month or so.

    As I began my study of Windows 8, I loaded my old PC with Server 2008 R2, I kept my OS(es) to a limit, 3 Servers and 3 clients, with 3 more blank PCs.    I think I will move the servers over with the installation of Server 2012 to run Hyper at a later date.
