  • I have been reviewing virtual PC's over the last few months and have used my XP Media Center install CD as the guest OS several times.  Registration has gone fine for each test (VMWare a couple of times, VirtualBox, and M'soft Virtual PC 2007).  On working with another install of VMWare last night, a nasty gram indicated the install of this OS had exceeded a defined limit.  I was able to activate the install over the phone with no issues, and I appreciate that.

Is there some way to clear the number of installs on my PC?  I am running the original install from the manufacturer and have deleted those virtual machines that I have found lacking, had problems with, etc. and am still looking at M'soft VPC and VMware.  Both have shortcomings and one will be removed.

My goal is to have my host OS as a true work environment and the guest OS (whatever that turns out to be) as my internet and e-mail connection.

    Thanks in advance,
    jay

  • Where did you get this CD from? Usually, it only allows 1 install, unless its MSDN. Please post the specific error.

  • The CD came with the machine from Dell (E521 dual core).

It has been used with each Virtual PC install with zero issues until last evening..

  • Normally, then, it would not require to be activated - The CDs with your PCs are OEM SLP, which are tied to your PC manufacturer and do not require activating. Now, when you install, do you enter the COA SLP key, or the OEM SLP key

  • I entered the COA SLP key located on the PC frame.

It appears that there is a finite limit of how many times that this key can be used for installs, which I can understand.  However, installs on the same hardware through the use of virtual PC's count towards this finite number and do require activation.

Is there a way to reset this finite number?

I am certainly not trying to cheat Microsoft out of it's $$$.  Quite the contrary!  I have four PC's in my home and each one has a vaild OS install CD that I either purchased or that came with the PC from the vendor.  I'm just trying to make sure that the OS install CD that came with this hardware remains VALID for this hardware, regardless of how many times I install it on this hardware.  Nothing more than that!

    Thanks,

  • Are you using the manufacturer's install CD or your own. If you would like not to activate, you have to use your OEM's SLP (Dell, Acer, etc) It is tied to that manufacturer's SLIC table in the BIOS.

I will give you the Key to use for XP Pro (replaces any manufacturer's key. It can be found on TechNet : http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/bb457078.aspx)

    Windows XP Professional 32 bit

    XXXXXXXXXXXX

    Windows XP Tablet PC Edition

    XXXXXXXXXXXX

    Windows XP Professional x64 bit

    XXXXXXXXXXXX

And: Dell's MCE OEM SLP Key:

    XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX

Remember: The above Key can only be used for Dell Computers with Media Center Edition.

  • The install DVD is the Dell Reinstallation DVD for the "operating system already installed on your computer".  The DVD came with the hardware when I purchased.

Thanks for the information and the help.

Does the OEM SLP key not require you to activate anymore?
     It shouldn't.
