Server Folders Not Displaying in Dashboard RRS feed

  • Question

  • Last week I was in the Dashboard looking at Server Folders and I don't remember exactly what I was doing but the action hung and I had to close the window. I am pretty sure it is the same situation as in this post, Forum Post

I did run chkdsk /r on all 5 drives I have in the machine (which took well over a day to run) but I still only see "Refreshing the list of items..." message in the Dashboard for both the Server Folders Tab and the Hard Drive Tab.

The folders appear in the workgroup and I can access the contents both from a client as well as in a RDC session. I'm not sure what else I can try to fix this error or where to look for further clues as to why it's not happening. I'd like to upgrade 1 of the drives and move some files around but don't want to do that before this problem is resolved.

    Thanks,

    George

  • No idea but I assume that you have tried a re-boot?

  • Yes, several reboots in fact. There doesn't seem to be much information about how the Dashboard gets populated so I can track down where the information is stored. I'm assuming something is corrupt yet the actual data is not. If I try to add a folder in the Dashboard I just get a pop window with an error so this is something that I need to fix before I can move forward.

    Thanks, George

  • Try starting the Dashboard with any Add-Ins disabled. Have you tried opening the Dashboard directly on the Server or using RDP?

  • OK, I tried that and interestingly the only Add-In I have installed (MyMovies) did not appear in the list to allow me to disable it. I tried a few times disabling some of the built-in add ins but that didn't help the issue.

I saw another post where someone noted that their "windows Service Storage Service" wasn't running but I checked services and mine is. One odd thing though is if I try to stop the service or restart it I get an error that said something along the lines like it timed out trying to stop the service. After several attempts of stopping or restarting I gave up but when I just checked it again it stated that the service was stopped so I started it and magically the folders and drives now appear in the Dashboard.

I'm a little nervous to do a server reboot or anything but while I have access to managing the folders I'll do some checking and later cross my fingers with a reboot and hope that the problem is gone for good.

    Thanks, George

  • Well it seems I'm better but not 100% fixed. Not sure if it was just because of a reboot (both client and server) but the list dropped out again. I tried to restart the service and got the same time out error but the service actually did stop but not start again. I started the service and list f folders appears in the Dashboard. However when I view the folder properties on any of the shares it shows the size at 0GB for all the shares yet in the tab it shows a value of free space for each shared folder.

When I check the sharing properties tab I see the following error message on that tab:

Cannot retrieve user access level permissions for the folder.

An unexpected error has occurred 8004008A-. Try this task again.....

There's something under the hood amiss and I think I need to find out what and fix it before something bad happens. Just not sure where to look...

    Thanks, George

  • Do you backup your server? If so, you might want to go back to a time when it was working.

  • That could be part of the catalyst for all of this trouble. The external backup drive which I used for backups failed. I purchased the same Seagate 2TB Backup Plus drive but it could not be used for backup because even though it was the same model 2TB drive it was not able to be formatted with 512e sector support. I have a WD drive coming in tomorrow which I hope can be formatted to work using WD's special formatter but we'll see about that.

I am able to view the Server Folders and change security and sharing during a RDP session so I don't think the actual data is bad but somehow whatever interface from the Dashboard to the folders seems to be broke. Using the Dashboard I am also able to view the individual drives with the used and total space as well as the shadow copy schedule.

    Thanks, George

  • Hi George,

àI tried to restart the service and got the same time out error but the service actually did stop but not start again. I started the service and list f folders appears in the Dashboard.

Thanks for sharing in the forum. Your time and efforts are highly appreciated.

à An unexpected error has occurred 8004008A

When check the sharing properties tab and encounter above error, did you still successfully access those contents on the Server Folders? Just a confirmation, thanks for your understanding.

Please refer to following article and check if can help you.

    Managing Server Folders

By the way, please follow the path: C:\ProgramData\Microsoft\Windows Server\Logs and check relevant log files if find more clues.

If any update, please feel free to let us know.

    Hope this helps.

    Best regards,

    Justin Gu

  • Hi Justin:

If I check files and folders on the server everything seems to be OK. There is just something wrong and I'm having difficulty locating the source of the trouble and fixing it. I still cannot find what the Dashboard does to populate the Server Folder tab. I have been experimenting the past few days and am having trouble if I try to do anything with the server folders through the Dashboard. I had 1 folder actually show the Sharing properties (right click server folder, properties, then sharing tab) and I could select what users had different access rights. Then during my experimenting this folder now gives the 8004008A error like all the other shared folders. I can access folders on the server and share them and they appear in the Dashboard but I cannot view the sharing properties.

I'm beginning to wonder if somehow there is a user or group that has something wrong and this is causing problems. One clue I might have found was from looking into the log folder as you suggested. If I look at storageservice.120814.log I can find entries like this:

    [12/08/2014 11:18:15 1a50] ---- Folder::SendEvent

    [12/08/2014 11:18:15 1a50] share status = Deleted

So it is showing "share status = Deleted" for several of the folders that are still shared and do show up on the clients (both in the Homegroup as well as network shares). Under "Administration Tools" I find "Share and Storage Management". Can I use that to remove the shares and then add them back? Right now I don't think I can do anything with the shares through the Dashboard.

    Thanks, George
