Windows is not Genuine? After owning my laptop for a year.... RRS feed

  • Question

  • So, after almost exactly a year, but my laptop informs me that my Windows 7 is not genuine. I have been met with the black background and annoying popups for a few months now. I know, months....but I just haven't had much time lately, and it really hasn't been all that annoying. I did do the whole thing where they tell you to send them the receipt and CD and what not...but, I never received a CD. It was pre-installed when I bought it! So, help? Please!

I have seen that peopke post a lengthy report of their computers? Would this help someone to help me? If so, how do I find this...?

    Thanks!

  • Well, Microsoft 2007 came with the computer. It was one of those trial versions. Should I still remove it?

I'll try the "Win7 compilant one" thing. What exactly does that do?

As for the COA sicker...the numbers are kinda worn of, I can maybe make it out, but it might be wrong. Though if I do change it, and it's right, will this fix all the problems?

    Thanks!

The BIOS (Basic Input/Output Software) on your computer is what allows the Operating System to talk to the motherboard hardware. Updating it it with the proper version will either replace the existing code with more recent code, or ‘refresh’ the existing code, if there is a minor problem with it. If there is a major problem with the BIOS code, the system would be unable to start at all.
The SLIC table resides in a part of the BIOS that is not usually updated by public BIOS updates, but some manufacturers do put occasional versions up if they know that there is a problem with an existing one.

Your problems won’t get any worse, if you get the Key wrong.

As far as Office is concerned, What came with the system was a Trial of Office 2007 Home & Student – the other two have been installed at your end, and are either non-functional (because unactivated) or counterfeit.
If you haven’t purchased a license for Home & Student since you bought the machine then that Trial will also have expired – if you need some form of Office functionality, you can either:_
    1) download Office Click-to-run (ad-funded installation of a limited-functionality version of Office)
    2) install an alternative to MS Office, such as Libre Office
    or
    3) purchase a license for whichever version of Office 2010 you require

What’s the EXACT model number of your PC? (The serial number may be useful as well)

Unfortunately that data isn’t enough  for me to pin down the BIOS update needed.
Look here for the list of options
    »
» Compaq Presario CQ62-100 Notebook PC series
» Compaq Presario CQ62-200 Notebook PC series
» Compaq Presario CQ62-300 Notebook PC series
» Compaq Presario CQ62-400 Notebook PC series
» Compaq Presario CQ62-a00 Notebook PC series

You need to use the link for the one you have, then the actual model you have, and select Windows 7 64bit as the Operating System

Once there, click on the BIOS update (in the left column of the list).
Check that the Revision list contains an F.29 value for the version – if it does, you’ve found the right one.

Then download it and install it following the instructions on the page.

  • Download and run CPU-Z (the 1.59 setup English version) and then click on the Mainboard tab of the program.  Then post back with the BIOS version and Model number that is shown.
